Blackwood Miners’ Institute is transformed into a boxing gym on Saturday 5th May when Ragroof Theatre performs the ‘knock-out’ production Gloves On! Set in a full-size boxing ring, Gloves On conveys the emotional, physical and psychological challenge of a boxer’s experience and reveals the intricacies of courage, honour, ritual and spectatorship of the sport. ‘Gloves On is theatre presented like a sporting spectacle,’ said Sharon Casey, the institute’s general manager, ‘a physical theatre performance inspired by real experiences within the boxing community.’ ‘The compere introduces his fighters for the evening’s spectacle and the audience is invited to take the side of the champion or challenger as the boxers display their pugilistic prowess.’ ‘Stories of boxers and their families collide in the ring to a pumping soundtrack, against a backdrop of urban art. Pounding break-beats fill the space, adding to the atmosphere, as the fighters enter the ring and the battle commences…’ Ragroof Theatre is a Brighton-based theatre company that creates work for unusual spaces, taking inspiration from the sites in which they perform. They are a collective of individual artists with a dazzling array of skills in dance, physical theatre, visual art and written word. From Monday 30th April to Thursday 3rd May, Ragroof will also host a series of free performing arts, dance and boxing workshops with young people in the community.
