NOTIONAL THEATRE presentsFRAGMENTS OF ASH Written and Directed by Terry Victor Music composed by Gareth Wyn Griffiths Movement direction by Kylie Ann Smith Fragments of Ash is an electrifying new play. Intelligent, physical theatre that addresses the news agenda and explores the domestic impact of war after war after war. A love story, measured in tragedies, which asks a shocking question: what would it take to make an ordinary British mother become a suicide bomber? With the current news focus very much on military wives and mothers, Fragments of Ash, written in 2010 tells the story of how an ordinary army wife and mother is affected by war after war after war. The Spring 2012 tour follows a hugely successful run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2011. Terry Victor, the writer and director behind this innovative touring production, has brought together a team that represents the very best of contemporary arts. Gareth Wyn Griffiths is an inspired and respected musician and composer: he provides a score that is by turns minimal and cinematic, painting sound pictures of an imagined Afghanistan. Kylie Ann Smith is an emerging talent: her breath-taking choreography focuses on the emotional heart of a narrative that has been described as a ‘domestic Black Watch’. Reviews for Fragments of Ash include: “...the excellence and the beauty of the piece is very strong”. Theatre Wales. ““…a very important piece of theatre.” ★★★★ Informed Edinburgh. “ Combining physical theatre and naturalism, Notional Theatre take a devastating look at the Home Front of modern British warfare.” The Stage. The cast is impressive: Tracey Briggs, last seen in the national tour of Calendar Girls, plays Eleanor; Rebecca Alexander, whose recent work includes Jeffery Bernard is Unwell for Bath Theatre Royal, plays Rashida; Dick Bradnum, whose stage credits include Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth for the English Shakespeare Company and Malvolio in Twelfth Night for York Theatre Royal, plays Ken; Sam Harding, who left Italia Conti Drama School in 2011, has had a busy first year as a professional actor in works which include Spring Awakening and Art of Concealment – he will be playing Ash; and Janine Cooper-Marshall, one of Wales’ busiest voice-over artistes, revisits her silent role in the Edinburgh Fringe performance in Fragments Of Ash. The serious intent of this powerful and disturbing drama can be measured by the involvement of BBC newsreader, Jamie Owen.
