Coronation Street writer inspired to create a play about traditional Cardiff pubs |
Cardiff born Coronation street writer, Simon Crowther has written a new play based on a group of friends reuniting for one night, which is set in Cardiff. The Get Together is being produced as part of Sherman Cymru’s RAW events, which will be staged at the theatre from 22 – 26 May. The Get Together is a familiar story about a group of friends who reunite in one of their old haunts in Cardiff. A group of four friends meet to chat about memories, betrayal and blood. Bull and Anna are in love. Marie and Clarkey aren’t. It’s cold outside. Jaws is on the telly. Carol, the landlady, tells the others about Phil’s complicated history and tragedy at Longleat! Writer, Simon Crowther who now writes for Coronation Street and Hollyoaks, talks about his inspiration for the play: “I’d been wanting for a while to write a reunion play, set in a Cardiff pub – the type that’s going out of business. The result was The Get Together, a comedy about failure, jealousy and regret.” The Get Together is part of Sherman Cymru’s RAW events, which gives writers and directors the opportunity to produce new writing on a limited budget, showcasing quality writing and acting without the frills of set designs and staging. This is the second year Sherman Cymru has produced a more thrills than frills production following last years successful English language show, The Sanger and the Welsh production of Tân Mewn Drain. Artistic Associate for Sherman Cymru and Director of The Get Together, Róisín McBrinn says: “This is the first play I’ve directed under the paired-back production style of RAW. In fact, it’s my first Sherman Cymru production. I am delighted to be working with Simon on his wonderful piece – in just over an hour, he’s packed a huge amount of humour and pathos in and it’s exciting to hear some Cardiff voices on our stage. RAW is an important initiative that is central to Sherman Cymru’s ambition to produce as many new plays as possible.” The quality cast line up includes Nia Roberts (Patagonia, Crash), Huw Rhys (Shameless, Crash), Bafta Cymru winner Mali Harries (The Famous Baker Boys, Caerdydd, The Indian Doctor), Jason May (The Bill, Belonging, Torchwood, Little White Lies ) Gareth Pierce (Pobol Y Cwm, Hollyoaks, Caerdydd) and Ri Richards as Carol the landlady (Satellite City, Alys, High Hopes). The Get Together will be staged in Theatre 2, Sherman Cymru, Cardiff from 22 – 26 May at 8pm. Tickets are £10, preview performance on 22 May is £7 and under 25s get half price tickets.
