The cast of Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru’s exciting production of ‘Y Storm’ will include a number of well-known names from the world of Welsh theatre. ‘Y Storm’ is a Welsh language translation of Shakespeare’s classic ‘The Tempest’, and the cast include Llion Williams as main character Prospero, Lisa Marged as his daughter Miranda, Meilir Rhys Williams will play the ghost Ariel with Simon Nehan as Caliban. Other members of the cast are Gwydion Rhys, Ioan Hefin, Ceri Murphy, Sion Pritchard, Rhodri Siôn, Hugh Thomas and Seiriol Thomas. ‘Y Storm’ is part of the World Shakespeare Festival and the London 2012 Festival, the cultural programme of the Olympic games. It will be performed, in association with Wales Millennium Centre, National Eisteddfod of Wales, Pontio & Citrus Arts on the National Eisteddfod field in Llandow, Vale of Glamorgan between 07-11 August 2012. It will also be performed at Carmarthen between 18-21 September 2012 and the Vaynol Estate, Bangor between 02-06 October 2012. This new Welsh translation by former National poet Gwyneth Lewis includes live music and the physical element of circus by Citrus Arts. The creative team includes Elen Bowman as the director (Deffro’r Gwanwyn, The Devil Inside Him), the composer Simon Allen and choreographer and movement director Liz Ranken. Arwel Gruffydd, Artistic Director of Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru said: “Shakespeare’s plays are being performed all over the World in a variety of different languages and Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru are proud to be producing ‘The Tempest’ in the Welsh language as part of the World Shakespeare Festival this summer. “Presenting this play to a Welsh audience, and working with Gwyneth to explore what happens to a classical story when it is spoken in Welsh – together with Elen Bowman’s inventive directorship – will be a spectacular cultural celebration, and I look forward to see the audiences reaction to this production.” |
