Local Amateur Dramatic groups showcase their work with the RSC at Sherman Cymru, Cardiff. |
13 local Amateur Dramatic Companies from around Wales and the South West will be performing extracts of plays they have developed with the RSC’s Open Stages Project at Sherman Cymru, Cardiff from 5-7 July.As part of the RSC’s Open Stages project engaging with and celebrating amateur theatre, the RSC invited amateur companies from across the region to produce their own Shakespeare or Shakespeare inspired productions. The RSC have set up 10 partnerships around the U.K including working with Sherman Cymru in Cardiff. As a celebration of Shakespeare and amateur theatre, the companies had the opportunity of developing their skills and Shakespeare themed plays through workshops. Eventually they performed some of the extracts from their productions in the Courtyard Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon back in March. The workshops were a chance for the companies to knowledge-share between professionals and amateurs and for participants to meet each other. Attendees benefited from professional expertise across a range of disciplines, including acting, movement, voice and text, directing, design, stage management and lighting. One of the local amateur dramatic groups, Lisvane Players were thrilled to be involved with the opportunity during their 60th anniversary. Director of Lisvane Players, Liz Heaven said: “Open Stages has been a great experience for our group. We have attended workshops with RSC directors, coaches and designers. We have tackled pieces of Shakespeare which perhaps we would not have attempted otherwise.” The 11 local Amateur Dramatic Groups involved come from around Wales and the South West and will be showcasing extracts from the following plays: Actonian Drama Group The Paddington Tank Artistic License Romeo & Juliet Cardigan Theatre A Midsummer Nights Dream Company 5 Class Act Theatre School tbc The Tempest Everyman Theatre Twelfth Night Impatient Vagrant Jam Bones Macbeth Trolius & Cressida Lisvane Players All the World’s a Stage Oswestry Drama Project The Tempest Shakespeare Link Midsummer Night’s Dream St Michael’s Players Lord What Fools… St Paul’s Players Dragons RSC Open Stages producer Ian Wainwright said of the showcase events: “Whether you want to experience Shakespeare’s plays re-imagined in brilliant new interpretations, or sit back and watch some his greatest scenes performed with skill and passion, these showcase events have something to offer everyone.” The local amateur groups will be showcasing extracts of their work as part of RSC Open Stages at Sherman Cymru from 5-7 July.
