Biggest swingers in town head for Sherman Cymru

What happens if you group together some of the hottest talent in Welsh theatre, get them to spin a bottle, put a few mattresses on the floor and get them to stay awake all night?

Sherman Cymru have invited 20 writers, 10 directors and nearly 40 actors to create a unique experience, Sherman Swingers, where you get to see all the hidden corners of Sherman Cymru’s theatre in a new way. Like a lottery, there will be a gamble of which writers, directors and actors will be matched up and to spend that night creating 20 new plays.

On Friday 20th July, we’re inviting an eclectic mix of the best of Welsh theatre talent into Sherman Cymru. Once their groupings are picked from a lucky dip, the writers spend Friday night in the theatre, writing for a space that their Swingers key will unlock – somewhere you’ve never been in the theatre before. The directors and actors then have Saturday and Sunday morning to create their offering which will be performed, promenade-style around the building on Sunday 22 July.

Audiences will have the opportunity of seeing up to 20 short plays through a promenade tour of the various spaces in the theatre. Each piece will be about 5 minutes in length and some may even be about the space they are performed in. Artistic Associate for Sherman Cymru, Róisín McBrinn instigated the idea:

“It’s a great way to discover and explore our lovely new building. We will be using 20 different spaces and not the traditional theatre spaces either. It maybe be the roof, the toilet, the bar, the offices, even a little nook back stage which people didn’t know about. It will be a fun and exciting challenge for our writers and directors involved but a real re-imaging of the theatre.”

A long list of experienced and up coming writers and directors have decided to get involved in the Sherman Swingers including: Dafydd James (Llwyth, The Village Social, My Name is Sue), Helen Griffin (Caitlin, Who’s of Afraid of Rachel Roberts), Philip Ralph (Deep Cut), Louise Osborn (Cinders, Plum), Alan Harris (Cardboard Dad, Good Night Out in the Valleys), Bethan Marlow (Sgint), Tim Price (For Once, Salt, Root and Roe, Dirty Protest) and directors are Mared Swain (Dirty Protest) Matilde Lopez (National Theatre Wales) James Williams (The Elves and the Shoemakers, Give It A Name), Adele Thomas (National Theatre Wales’s The Passion and Sherman Cymru’s Cityscapes), Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama’s Head of Drama, Dave Bond and many more…

“Sherman Swingers will be a celebration of some of the many talented theatre makers in Wales, as well as our new building. It aims to be a fun adventure but, more importantly, it is part of our initiative to produce as many writers as possible. We want to challenge writers, directors and actors to work in a responsive manner and to encourage them to experiment and hopefully initiate new working relationships.”

Sherman Swingers will be performed at Sherman Cymru on Sunday 22 July from 5pm. There are performances every half an hour until 8.30pm. Tickets are £8 and £4 for under 25s. To see all 20 performances over two tours ticket prices are £15 and £7.50 for under 25s. There will be different show tours throughout the evening.
