Cardiff’s new writing company, Dirty Protest is this month taking on their biggest challenge yet as they produce their first ever full length production. Dirty Protest was formed in 2007 with the intention to shake up the world of new writing in Cardiff. They wanted to produce accessible new work of high quality for the price of a pint or two. Since then Dirty Protest has worked with over a hundred writers producing nights of shorts in many bars and clubs around the city, with their regular ‘yurt’ events in Milgi bar on City Road. They have also taken their work to various theatre spaces in Cardiff and beyond including Sherman Cymru, WMC, Galeri Caernarfon, Roundhouse in Camden and Latitude Festival. Now they will be producing their first ever full length production and performing the Welsh premiere of Dennis Kelly’s After the End at Sherman Cymru from 11-14 July. One of the founder’s of Dirty Protest and the director of After the End, Mared Swain said, “We are very excited about producing our first full length production. Our supporters enjoy the fact we produce accessible short pieces of theatre in unusual spaces but we also wanted the opportunity to produce something a little more on this occasion, with a full set and production values.” After the End was written by British writer and Olivier Award winner, Dennis Kelly and produced by Paines Plough in 2005, who is best known for his television series The Pulling and for co-writing the hit musical of Matilda in the West End. The not-for-profit theatre company has a grant from the Arts Council but have also turned to crowdfunding to help raise money for the production. The theatre company has been offering writing, directing, casting workshops plus t-shirts and badges all in return to donating to the company. Former National Theatre Wales creative associate Catherine Paskell who has recently joined the theatre company this is a modern way to try and raise money for theatre. She said, We want to get bigger as a company and challenge ourselves. We can do a lot with sheer energy, but extra money is also key. So we decided internet fundraising would be a great way to offer people some exclusive experiences and for them to get something back when they donate to us.” After the End is a psychological thriller set in modern day London. A nuclear attack leaves Mark and Louise fighting for survival in a fall-out bunker in London. In this masterful two-hander, award-winning playwright Dennis Kelly explores terrorism in its many brutal forms. Mared Swain said, “It’s a dark psychological thriller that’s got a real gripping script. The play is a very skillful exploration of the qualities of human interaction under extreme circumstances. As intense as the situation is in this play, there are moments of humour and real emotional intensity which will be a joy to explore.” Performing in this thriller will be Kezia Burrows who has performed with National Theatre Wales (A Provincial Life), BBC One Wales (Crash) Sherman Cymru (Measure for Measure) and Gruffudd Glynn who will be making his first Welsh theatre debut after performing in a number of RSC productions. Also involved in this full length production is writer and producer, Tim Price who has had recent success with Paines Plough and with his own play, For Once. Stage management will be by Sarah Buchan-Terrey is a recent graduate of Swansea Metropolitan University having completed a BA Hons in Performing Arts specialising in Technical Theatre and Stage Management. *After the End will be staged in Theatre 2, Sherman Cymru, Cardiff from 11-14 July at 8pm.
