Sherman Cymru announces Autumn 2012 programme and their commitment to new writing |
Following a successful first six months since re-opening, Sherman Cymru has today revealed their Autumn programme, which includes a mix of Welsh, UK and International artists and demonstrates Sherman Cymru’s strong commitment to the development of new writing from Welsh and Wales based writers. There also sees a somewhat Celtic and African flair with the National Theatre of Scotland, Glasgow Citizens Theatre and a week long African Festival all at Sherman Cymru.Director of Sherman Cymru Chris Ricketts said: “We had a strong and exciting opening season, which saw our previous supporters as well as new audiences return to our lovely new home. We continue to programme a real mix of regional, national and international companies and artists to excite, engage and provide a cultural experience for all. We also want to show our commitment to being the home of new writing in Wales.” Sherman Cymru will be launching their season with the return of their Welsh Language production with Theatr Genedlaethol, Llwyth which will be appearing at the Taipai International Arts Festival before returning to Sherman Cymru from 12-14 September. This will be the third time Llwyth has toured the UK but will be the first time it will have been performed at Sherman Cymru’s home. The Welsh language show was a huge success at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2011 and non-Welsh speaking audiences can also enjoy the experience as all performances have English subtitiles. Continuing their commitment to develop and champion new writers from Wales, Sherman Cymru will be co-producing a new drama with Bristol Old Vic, Before It Rains, written by Bridgend based writer Katherine Chandler and directed by Sherman Cymru’s Associate Director Roísín McBrinn. Before It Rains is set on a hard-bitten, back woods Cardiff estate. It’s a story about a mother and son and what happens when a new family moves into the estate. Funny, brave and beautifully told, Katherine Chandler’s tale of parenthood, protection and provocation looks at how we all develop our own ways of coping with the world, our craving for companionship and the consequences of having either threatened. Chris Ricketts said: "We're really pleased to be working with Bristol Old Vic on Before It Rains and hope it will be the first of many collaborations between us. Kath is a really promising writer who we know will make a strong name for herself over the years ahead. That both companies wanted to work with her on this piece is testament to her talent and the confidence we have in her writing." Bristol Old Vic’s Emma Stenning says: “Our work over the past few years has been a real lesson in reaching out beyond our theatre – and beyond Bristol – and this hugely exciting co-production with Cardiff’s Sherman Cymru continues our instinct to collaborate. Katherine Chandler’s script sings; at times uproariously funny, at others, thuddingly poignant and full of colloquial attitude and swagger. Before It Rains – and its deeply compelling central character – won’t be forgotten in a hurry.” As part of the Autumn season programme, National Theatre of Scotland will be bringing three productions to the new Sherman Cymru! They make their first visit back to Sherman Cymru in October with Yellow Moon alongside their co-produced show, The Monster in the Hall with Glasgow’s Citizens Theatre. Both Yellow Moon and The Monsters in the Hall will be performed during the same week from 9-13 October and will have the same cast in both productions. Guy Hollands, Director of Yellow Moon and The Monster in the Hall: “It has long been my dream to be able to present David Greig’s two outstanding plays in a double-bill. They complement each other so well because they were both devised as full-throttle in the round storytelling that would grab a teenage audience’s attention and keep them on the edge of their seats. We soon discovered that both plays were of equal interest to an adult audience and one of the joys has been to see a genuine mix of ages in the theatre sharing the experience of high quality writing delivered by a skilled and passionate cast.” Following the National Theatre of Scotland’s double bill, they will be returning a week later with Frantic Assembly to bring their award-winning play, Beautiful Burnout, which is about life around a Glasgow Boxing ring. This will be the third visit to Wales in less than 7 months for Frantic Assembly who have started to build a reputation in Wales for producing quality theatre following Lovesong at Sherman Cymru in February and Little Dogs with National Theatre Wales in May. Scott Graham from Frantic Assembly said: “Following a great first time experience and huge success last year with Lovesong we are thrilled to be returning to the wonderful Sherman Cymru with Beautiful Burnout. Having formed in Wales it feels great to be bringing our work back and collaborating within what is becoming an exciting and increasingly vibrant creative environment. Frantic Assembly and National Theatre of Scotland’s Beautiful Burnout will be at Sherman Cymru from 23 – 27 October. Sherman Cymru will be hosting a special week long African Festival in October which will coincide with the launch of Black History Month hosted at the venue. UK Arts International will be presenting Afrovibes a festival of cutting edge theatre, dance and music giving visitors the chance to immerse themselves in the best of contemporary performance from southern Africa. Further information and full listings will be on the Sherman Cymru website. Living Pictures will be bringing Gogol’s dark comedy, Diary of A Madman to Sherman Cymru on 25 and 26 October. Two Wales based companies will be making their first visit back to the new Sherman Cymru theatre this autumn. Volcano will be remounting their production of L.O.V.E on 30 and 31 October and Music Theatre Wales will be bringing a double bill of new opera’s, one of which is based on a dramatic thriller, which will be performed for one night only on 2 November. Headlong will be making their first Welsh appearance with their startlingly modern version of Euripides’ classic, Medea, which will be at Sherman Cymru from 6 – 10 November. The award wining comedian, Mark Thomas will be performing at Sherman Cymru on 14 and 15 November. There will be more quality family shows at Sherman Cymru during the half term holidays with Cloud Man from 30 October – 3 November and Travelling Light Theatre’s new production for ages 9+, The Mysterious Vanishment of Pobby and Dinghan on 17 November, just before Sherman Cymru opens its Christmas shows. Sherman Cymru will be producing its first two Christmas shows back in its new home, which will be Peter Pan in Theatre 1 for ages 7+ and the Snow Tiger / Teigr Yr Eira in Theatre 2 for 3-6 year olds. Adapted by Cardiff’s Rob Evans and directed by Sherman Cymru’s Associate Director Roísín McBrinn, Peter Pan will be a festive treat for all the family and an ideal alternative from pantomime. Peter Pan will be performed on the main stage from 30 November – 5 January. Sherman Cymru continues to produce their Christmas show for Welsh and English audiences aged 3-6 with a new commissioned play by writer, Philip Michell. The Snow Tiger / Teigr Yr Eira is based on a Scandinavian folk tale and will be touring around South Wales before coming to Sherman Cymru in time for Christmas on 11 December. The season, which totals over 22 different productions in all, also includes National Youth Dance Wales, Theatr Ffynnon, Wayne McGregor and Random Dance, Pentabus, Theatr Iolo and Theatr Bara Caws.
