Leading Asian Arts Festival Welcomes Welsh Play Llwyth

A successful Welsh play will take centre stage at a leading Asian arts festival next month.

Sherman Cymru and Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru will be taking the hit production Llwyth [Tribe], by playwright Dafydd James to the Taipei Arts Festival in Taiwan from 31 August – 02 September 2012.

This is the first time that either company has toured its work internationally.

The invitation to attend the Taipei Arts Festival came as a result of the performances at the Edinburgh Fringe Festval in 2011, where Llwyth featured in the British Council Edinburgh showcase.

Arwel Gruffydd, Artistic Director of Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru and director of Llwyth commented: "There was an unbelievable response to 'Llwyth' at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival last year, and this is a very exciting development for Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru as we take a Welsh language production, that has already been so popular here in Wales, on an international adventure to Taiwan.”

There will be one performance of Llwyth in Carmarthen on 23 August 2012, before jetting off to the Taiwanese capital. On returning to Wales, there will be further performances at Clwyd Theatr Cymru, Mold on 06-07 September and Sherman Cymru, Cardiff between 12-14 September 2012.

In order to attract non Welsh speakers, all the performances will be with English language surtitles.

Originally produced by Sherman Cymru in April 2010, ‘Llwyth’ received rave reviews and played to packed theatres throughout Wales, as well as having a sell-out run in London. It was revived last year as a co-production between Sherman Cymru and Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru when it was taken on another successful tour of Wales and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Llwyth is directed by Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru’s Artistic Director Arwel Gruffydd and stars Simon Watts, Danny Grehan, Paul Morgans, Michael Humphreys and Joshua Price, and features local choirs wherever it is performed…….including Taipei.

Chris Ricketts, Artistc Director of Sherman Cymru said: “Llwyth has been a fabolous production, enjoyed hugely by the thousands of people that have seen it. The production has achieved so many aspirations for us as a company and it’s fitting that its last outing includes performances internationally. Our thanks must go to the British Council which is supporting the visit to Taipei and for the opportunity we had with the Edinburgh Showcase last year to draw a wider audience into the piece.”
