WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART’S DON GIOVANNI

WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART’S DON GIOVANNI

Mid Wales Opera returns this autumn with Mozart’s Don Giovanni, a tale of love, lust, betrayal and revenge.

All human passion is unmasked in this tense claustrophobic world, “sinners all will burn in hell”. The Don ducks and dives but cannot in the end escape his fate, while all around him others fall prey to their own weakness…

Translated into English by Amanda Holden and with a tense and climatic finale Don Giovanni is a roller-coaster opera not to be missed as it tours the intimate venues of Wales and England.

The international cast of performers bring an array of experience and talent to the stage. South African born baritone Njabulo Madlala described as having “the richest and most distinctive voice” takes the lead of the infamous seducer Don Giovanni. Wyn Pencarreg returns as a regular favourite to MWO as the servant Leporello. Having previously worked in “Madam Butterfly” and “The Marriage of Figaro”, Wyn is a regular on BBC radio and brings a wealth of experience to the company.

After competing in the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World, Australian born mezzo soprano Helen Sherman takes the role of the mysterious Donna Elvira, a previous conquest of Don Giovanni’s. Catrin Aur takes the role of Donna Anna, another of Don Giovanni’s love interests and daughter of the Commendatore. Catrin, originally from West Wales, understudied the role with Glyndebourne Touring Opera and was the recipient of the first ever Dame Shirley Bassey Vocal award while studying at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.

After the success of last year’s “amazing achievement” Madam Butterfly, Artistic Director Nicholas Cleobury will be show casing the talents of the Mid Wales Chamber Orchestra through the well-known, dramatic, and emotionally charged melodies of Don Giovanni. Audiences will also witness the return of the successful pairing of Director Martin Lloyd-Evans and Designer Bridget Kimak. Their vast operatic back catalogue of La Bohe_me, Figaro and many others have received fantastic reviews “the packed house was held in thrall” and they make another welcome return to MWO.

Mid Wales Opera revenue is funded by the Art Council of Wales and receives touring support from Arts Council England. We are also grateful for the support of Powys County Council, the Ashley Family Foundation, Oldbell 3, Control Techniques, Ceredigion Country Council, the John Ellerman foundation, the Millichope Foundation, the Gwendoline and Margaret Davies Charity, and the Patrons, Benefactors and Friends of Mid Wales Opera.

Don Giovanni will be debuting at Theatr Hafren on 5th, 7th & 8th September 2012 and will continue on to an extensive tour of both Wales & England. For further details visit www.midwalesopera.co.uk
