Following 8 months of research, workshops and residency with 18 teenagers, Theatr Ffynnon, Sherman Cymru Youth Theatre, Crownbridge Special Needs School with support from Torfaen Youth Service and Torfaen Transitional Team, look to unravel what happens between the listener and speaker when the “expectation of communication is violated”.

Directed by John Norton and Phillip Mackenzie

Cluttering will explore an often irregular world through the eyes of these 18 teenagers.

With an erratic rhythm and disjointed syntax, cluttering results in poor fluency, and a challenging loss of meaning. ‘Cluttering is a communication disorder characterized by speech that is difficult for listeners to understand due to rapid speaking rate, erratic rhythm, half my view is blocked by a massive tree, poor syntax or grammar, She likes Abba and words or groups of words, she is 19 unrelated to the sentence.

2 groups of young people talk about the world, which is either abnormally fast, irregular, or both. In cluttered speech, the person’s speech and their aspirations is affected by one or more of the following: (1) failure to maintain normally expected sound, syllable, phrase, spending 9 days together and pausing in exploration and research patterns; (2) evidence of greater than expected incidents of disfluency, to create a performance’

Although the play is not strictly about cluttering, this devised piece of theatre attempts to challenge expectations and perceptions. “People usually expect (Speech & Language Therapists) to fix the stammer/clutter, but the most progressive thinking is to educate the listener”. John Norton.
