The National Youth Theatre of Wales and National Trust in Wales are welcoming audiences to walk through the grounds and gardens of two of Wales’ most significant properties, encountering a series of theatrical treats and tales. Chirk Castle, Wrexham and Llanerchaeron (near Aberaeron) are the National Trust locations for the Youth Theatre’s production of Torri Ffiniau / Beyond Borders – using Celtic stories, and the natural settings and formal landscapes of both properties for inspiration. National Trust in Wales is looking forward to hosting NYTW 2012, especially as NYTW members will continue to create and rehearse the work as they arrive – bringing a ‘bespoke’ element to each venue. “We are really pleased to welcome and support the National Youth Theatre of Wales with this production, especially given our current work commemorating Lord Howard de Walden’s patronage for Welsh arts in the 1920’s and 30’s. We are very excited to see theatrical performance at the castle, especially with young actors, and we can’t wait to see what they have produced.’ Emma Thompson, Property Manager, Chirk Castle Equally, Janice Thomas, Visitor Services Manager at Llanerchaeron, expressed delight at being chosen as a venue for this year’s NYTW production, “All the staff and volunteers are very much looking forward to working with the young and enthusiastic cast and crew on this innovative and exciting project” “We are hugely grateful to the National Trust for offering us two amazing locations, which have been both inspirational and creatively challenging. It’s a bold decision to work outdoors – made easier by such fantastic, historic locations which beautifully support our stories.” Tim Baker, NYTW Artistic Director Members of the National Youth Theatre of Wales 2012 have been in-residence in Aberystwyth – using the wooded areas surrounding the University campus and Aberystwyth Arts Centre, and even the beach, to trial and test their story-telling skills on passers-by. The stories themselves have been sourced from an extraordinary gathering that took place in July, when NYTW 2012 met in Lampeter for a weekend with story-tellers from the Celtic nations of Brittany, Cornwall, Ireland, Isle of Man, Scotland and Wales. The material explored by Youth Theatre members at that time became the starting-point for the main creation-period in Aberystwyth, resulting in this summer’s event. Devised by young people with support from NYTW Artistic Director, Tim Baker, and his creative team, Torri Ffiniau / Beyond Borders, combines story-telling with masks, puppetry, movement and music – and some high-tech wizardry. It promises to be a magical experience for all the family.
