Macbeth - the first project in Pontardawe’s innovative Shake it up – Shakespeare Project

A new fast moving, exciting production of this ever popular tragedy that many have called Shakespeare’s thriller. With a full cast, the size of Shakespeare’s own original company, this tale will fill the stage for a week with murder, treachery, blood and deceit.

Macbeth is Shakespeare’s shortest and bloodiest tragedy and tells the tale of a brave Scottish general named Macbeth who receives a prophecy from a trio of witches that one day he will be King of Scotland Consumed by ambition and pushed on by his wife Lady Macbeth he murders King Duncan and takes the throne. His reign is racked with paranoia and guilt and he soon becomes a tyrannical ruler as he is forced to commit more murders to protect the truth. Events then take Macbeth and Lady Macbeth through a journey of arrogance, guilt and death.

Directed by Derek Cobley, this production, the first in Pontardawe’s innovative Shake it up – Shakespeare Project sees Daniel Hawksford cast as Macbeth and Michelle McTernan as Lady Macbeth. Daniel trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) and his theatre work includes Macbeth and King Lear at The Globe, Much ado about Nothing and The Taming of the Shrew at The Royal Shakespeare Company and Romeo and Juliet and more recently Much Ado with Theatre Clwyd.

Michelle McTernan’s theatre credits include Twelfth Night and Cymbeline (Ludlow Festival), Twelfth Night and The Merchant of Venice (Wales Theatre) and recent television credits include ‘Stella’.

A host of actors from across South Wales including Chris Morgan, Lee Mengo, Tom Mumford, Lauralee Nicole among others, will bring these interactive workshops and live performances to the stage.

This play is a contemporary version of Macbeth so will involve modern warfare, modern Shakespeare and understandable imagery. It will be an entirely new interpretation but will follow the original script. It is all aimed at introducing Shakespeare to a young audience, making it accessible.
