Landmark Theatrical Event at the Sherman

This May, the Sherman Theatre is set to welcome a landmark theatrical event, in the shape of a cultural trilogy of plays that have been five years in the making. Journey to the West, from Tara Arts, reflects the stories and personal testimonies of hundreds of people interviewed in the creation of the plays and will be in Cardiff from Wednesday 15 until Saturday 18 May.

Part 1: 1896 Dhows, Deserts and Dirty Tricks (Wed 15 May 1.30pm and Sat 18 May 2pm)
A group of friends escape from the famine in the Punjab and Gujurat to work on the construction of the British East African Railway in Kenya. Sikhs, Muslims and Hindus work side by side before settling down roots in Africa.

Part 2: 1968 Rifts, Refugees and Rivers of Blood (Thurs 16 May 1.30pm and Sat 18 May 2pm)
Three grandchildren of the African settlers join the exodus from Kenya in a race against time to get into Britain before the Immigration Act comes into force. Once there, they must adapt quickly to sixties Britain, and attempt to become part of a nation made fearful by Enoch Powell's infamous 'Rivers of Blood' speech.

Part 3: 2002 Bhangra, Bollywood and British Bulldogs (Fri 17 May 1.30pm and Sat 18 May 2pm)
Thirty years on, Kam, a British born Asian, goes on a journey to find out who he really is. A story told against the back beat of Bhangra and Drum 'n' Bass.

The climax of the visit will be the trilogy performance on Saturday 18 May when all three plays will be shown and the foyer will be transformed into an Indian 'Chandi' Bazaar with traditional food, music and entertainment.

With dance, live music and song, colourful costumes and clever effects, the trilogy offers not only a delight to the eyes and ears but a genuine piece of contemporary multi-cultural theatre. It is written and directed by Tara Arts' Artistic Director, Jatinder Verma, who was the first non-white director at the Royal National Theatre and is now one of this country's leading directors with a track record of outstanding, groundbreaking theatre.

Tickets for the trilogy day are £18 or £15 for reductions. Call 029 2064 6900 for further enquiries and bookings
