Dance artists from across North Wales are taking to the stage, foyer and even walls of Galeri, Caernarvon for their first major collaborative event. Casgliad on Saturday, September 29 is being presented by the Dance Collective whose members work together to create work that is accessible and relevant to North Wales. While members of the Dance Collective have presented their work locally, in Europe and as far afield as South America this is the first evening wholly self-produced evening. With support from the new national dance organisation Coreo Cymru, the evening of home grown professional dance promises an exhilarating line up of performances, showing contemporary dance at its best. The evening includes the premier of Moving Pathways produced in collaboration with Manchester-based Company Chameleon. The new work explores the near misses and the moments of collision in a tender performance that sees the three dancers duck dive and leap over and under each other to search for the place where they belong. It features dancers and Collective members Lisa Spaull, Angharad Harrop and Colin Daimond. Lisa Spaull said, "Casgliad will be an exciting evening of dance for all ages to enjoy. There are a variety of pieces on the programme, from the latest members of the Collective. The pieces on show are all highly physical, engaging and most importantly entertaining. “The event is an important step forward for the professional dance sector in North Wales as it highlights our latest achievements to date." The new work, choreographed by Conwy-based dance artist Emma-Jane Sutcliffe, will be presented alongside works by Kate Lawrence, Despina Goula, Megan Henderson and Angharad Harrop. Moving Pathways has also been part funded by the Arts Council of Wales, Conwy County Borough Council and local businesses Peter Harrop Optometrist and APS Andrew Paul Sutcliffe. Colin Daimond added, "The North Wales Dance Collective has had a string of successful and well received performance projects in the area and this event showcases our latest pieces. At Casgliad audiences can see a diverse programme featuring IT, live musicians and vertical dance. “This event puts North Wales Dancers where they should be - at the forefront of performance. The work is accessible and will appeal to all ages; the first CASGLIAD is a springboard to raising the profile of Dance and Dancers in North Wales.” Colin said the Moving Pathways project has propelled the Dance Collective forward at an electrifying rate, doubling its membership with an influx of talent and new skills. Collective was keen to work with Company Chameleon as they are renowned for their down-to-earth attitude, physicality and definite choreographic style. “Initially we approached them for training; the sessions were very rewarding so we asked them back to provide input as mentors during the creation of Moving Pathways,” he explained. All performers at Casgliad are full-time professional artists. As well as performance that includes Kate Lawrence's case being a lecturer of performing arts at Bangor University, Angharad Harrop is also a Bangor University lecturer while Colin is also a percussionist and Capoeira instructor (Brazilian Martial art). All of the Dance Collective members are also involved in some kind of teaching/education. Colin welcomed the support the Collective has received from Coreo Cymru, Creative Dance Producer, Wales, which is charged with encouraging and managing the creation and production of new dance activity, and to support the development of Wales based artists and companies. He said, “Dance professionals within this area have often been overlooked. The Dance Collective was formed to ensure opportunities for local professionals. “The support from Coreo Cymru has enabled us to springboard the activities of the Dance Collective into the limelight and has increased our ability to do so tenfold. We see Casgliad as an evening that can be toured and can be shaped specific to each venue’s requirements. Coreo Cymru are helping us realise that aim.” The performances take place throughput and outside Galeri. On the Galeri stage are Perguntas & Atebion" is choreographed by Angharad Harrop includes live musicians and a skype link to Brazil and Bodies in Space, choreographed and performed by Megan Henderson and Despina Goula The foyer plays host to vertical dance Roped Together choreographed and performed by Kate Lawrence and Simon Edwards.
