De Oscuro and Wales Millennium Centre present Gaza/Blaenannerch

Leading Welsh director Judith Roberts joins forces with the celebrated choreographer and performer Eddie Ladd to perform Gaza/Blaenannerch, the first production by new company De Oscuro. Examining issues of identity, nationhood and what it means to be Welsh today, Gaza/Blaennerch is a compelling and provocative piece of dance theatre spoken in English and Welsh. It is a co-production with Wales Millennium Centre, where it will open prior to a short tour.

Sunday 21 to Tuesday 23 October 2012 at the Weston Studio, Wales Millennium Centre.

Set against Philip Glass's haunting String Quartets, No. 1 and No. 5 and performed with bold theatricality, combining movement with text, this seminal piece takes inspiration from the little known connection between Palestine and Blaenannerch in West Wales.

Gaza/Blaenannerch considers the complexities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from a fresh perspective - that of another nation striving to assert its identity: Wales.

De Oscuro was established by Judith Roberts with the intention to draw together some of Wales’s most talented and experienced artists. It is committed to working in both English and Welsh languages and exploring text based theatre alongside the physical language of dance and movement.

Eddie Ladd’s performances draw heavily on her rich Welsh cultural heritage and feature dance, bilingual text, music and new media technologies. She has made site-specific work as well as more regular theatre pieces and credits include The Bobby Sands Memorial Race, Bonnie +Clyde, Scarface, Sawnoff Scarface, Club Luz and Lla’th.

Judith Roberts’s directing credits include La Casa de Bernarda Alba, Act Without Words I and II, The Crucible, Le Misanthrope, Endgame (National Welsh Language Theatre), Not I, What Were and Act Without Words I (Gate Theatre Dublin and Barbican London) and Judith (The Project Arts, Dublin).

Tickets range from £8-£12. For further information visit www.wmc.org.uk
