GETINTHEBACKOFTHEVAN present EXTERNAL at Aberystwyth Arts Centre |
Tuesday 16 October, 2012 In EXTERNAL, maverick performance makers GETINTHEBACKOFTHEVAN challenge themselves to respond to Belgian company Ontroerend Goed's recent smash-hit piece Internal. But with conflicting ideas about how to do that, some stuff they found in a garage and a strict no-touch policy, how close do they really want to get? Jen wants to talk to you. She’s got a chair and a bottle of water. Lucy wants to give you the show of a lifetime. She’s got disco lights, sequinned pants, and a bag of hats. EXTERNAL deals head-on with the slippery questions of authenticity, originality, memory and authorship. GETINTHEBACKOFTHEVAN is a performance company making cross-genre work that plays with glory, endurance, artifice and the banal. They also curate the work of other artists and they are Artsadmin Associate Artists. GETINTHEBACKOFTHEVAN are known for positioning their work in dialogue with other artists, spaces and audiences. They were commissioned as Platformed Artists at Arnolfini (Bristol) last year to respond across the venue’s programme to the 50th Anniversary theme ‘The Apparatus of Culture’. This year they were commissioned to deliver a lecture on ‘Performance as Tourism’, discussing ‘responding’ as a mode of making work, for World Event Young Artists at Nottingham Playhouse. “All artists respond to other artists’ work, whether or not they know they are doing it” says Artistic Director Hester Chillingworth, who is also assistant to Forced Entertainment’s Artistic Director Tim Etchells. “In EXTERNAL we hurl that on-going conversation right out into the open and force it to fight for its life, fully exposed, giggling, gnashing and doing its own head in.” EXTERNAL was selected for SPILL National Platform 2011 (National Theatre Studio) and has played at Soho Theatre as well as touring nationally and internationally. On the basis of EXTERNAL, GETINTHEBACKOFTHEVAN were commissioned by Festival Belluard Bollwerk International to make their next show, Big Hits, which is now touring internationally. “GETINTHEBACKOFTHEVAN is at the forefront of Britain’s new breed of artists.” – Robert Pacitti, Artistic Director, SPILL Festival of Performance “EXTERNAL is mischievous, hilarious and thought-provoking. How exciting to see a young company discovering their own theatre language with such flair and humanity.” – Mark Ravenhill To book contact Aberystwyth Arts Centre 01970 62 32 32 or go online www.aber.ac.uk/artscentre. |
