Leading children’s theatre company celebrates 200th anniversary of Grimm’s Fairy Tales with playful production

This Autumn, South Wales based children’s theatre company Theatr Iolo will be celebrating the 200th anniversary of the publishing of Grimm’s Fairy Tales with Grimm Tales.

Grimm Tales, adapted by former Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy and dramatised by Tim Supple, is described as ‘Playful, mischievous and deliciously scary fairy tales for brave children and their grown-ups’ and will commence an eight week UK tour in October.

In the dead of night, the moon is hiding behind a cloud, and deep in the dark, dark forest two children are lost, scared and hungry…

How are we ever going to find our way out of this enormous forest?

A young girl, exhausted with work and deprived of a bed, lies down in the dirty ashes. Her stepsisters with hearts as ugly as thorns snigger at her.

Shake your leaves and branches, little tree,_
Shower gold and silver down on me.

Grimm Tales will be directed by Kevin Lewis, Artistic Director of Theatr Iolo:

“We’re really excited to be kicking off our 25th birthday year with Grimm Tales, as it’s a fine example of what we as a company stand for – quality childrens’ theatre that engages, entertains and maybe provokes a little. The Grimm stories are notoriously dark and quite sinister, but they’ve been watered down in popular culture into well-known stories like Cinderella that are really quite safe. What we’ll be aiming to do with Grimm Tales is bring back a little of that depth that makes the stories so interesting – in my experience, children love that contrast between light and dark, good and bad, and they can often handle more than we as adults give them credit for. Basically the show will be full of well known fairy tales as well as some not so well known ones, all told with wit, fun and a bit of good old-fashioned scariness!”

Theatr Iolo are company with an international reputation and have been leading the way in theatre for children and young people in Wales and beyond. Kevin again:

“It’s a big year for Theatr Iolo. It’s our 25th birthday year which is something to celebrate in itself, but 2012 also sees the company really moving into the next big chapter of its existence – we’ll be extending our touring, launching a new education strategy which will see our work with schools developing across the UK and also, a little closer to home, we have just started a new relationship with Chapter as a resident company. It’s a busy, busy time and very exciting – but certainly for me at least, it will be Grimm Tales that will be taking up every second of the next couple of months!”
