The Importance of Being Earnest

The Importance of Being Earnest Classic Wilde comedy comes to the New Theatre for the first time in over a decade

The New Theatre is eagerly awaiting the arrival of Oscar Wilde’s classic comedy of mistaken identity, The Importance of Being Earnest, after an absence of over ten years. In Cardiff for one week only from Tuesday 6 – Saturday 10 November, The Importance of Being Earnest is a beautifully plotted play, packed full of hilarious one-liners.

Jack Worthing lives in the country with his ward Cecily Cardew, but when in London he is known as Ernest and is in love with Gwendolen Fairfax. Gwendolen’s cousin is Algernon, but when he travels to Jack’s country house he is also known as Ernest, and is in love with Cecily…Confusion ensues!

The Importance of Being Earnest stars Corinne Wicks (Emmerdale, Doctors), Tom Butcher (The Bill, Doctors), Sarah Thomas (Last of the Summer Wine), Jim Alexander (The Bill, Dream Team), Sapphire Elia (Emmerdale), David Gooderson (A Touch of Frost), Gerry Hinks (Coronation Street) and Diane Fletcher (House of Cards) as Lady Bracknell.

The Importance of Being Earnest is produced by Middleground Theatre Company, the team behind Columbo: Prescription Murder and On Golden Pond. Founded in 1988, the company opened its first national tour (of museums and art galleries) in Scotland with a new piece of writing about the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.

Other early tours included a huge array of venues, from castles to hotel lounges, and the productionof six plays for ten-week tours of the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. Following these productions the company progressed to bigger theatres and eventually to number one tours. Today it is one of the UK’s most prolific and acclaimed production companies, having mounted over 40 productions.

The Importance of Being Earnest is at the New Theatre from Tuesday 6 – Saturday 10 November 2012. Tickets are on sale now with prices from £8.50 to £25.00. For further details about the show or to book tickets* visit www.newtheatrecardiff.co.uk or call the Box Office on (029) 2087 8889.
