This December, Out of the Blue, a theatre show for babies aged 6-18 months (and their grown-ups!), comes to Chapter in Cardiff. He’s waiting. Waiting for something to arrive. Ding, dong, doorbell. “Package for you.” A parcel. Unwrap it … “What’s inside?” And there’s paper to play with – scrunch, crunch, tear, rip, rustle. Hiding … “Peekaboo!” And then, one day, out of the blue, a wonderful surprise - the most special delivery of all … Enchanting and intimate, Out of the Blue has been created by Sarah Argent and Kevin Lewis, two of Wales’s leading theatre makers for young children, in association with Theatr Iolo. The character Kevin plays in Out of the Blue loves playing with paper – scrunching it, tearing it, ripping it, rustling it, and wrapping things up in it. Sarah comments: “Creating a piece for such young babies and toddlers brings with it a unique set of challenges but it’s been such a pleasure – especially when you see them being so engaged by what is often their first experience of live theatre. They love watching the captivating images and listening to the intriguing sounds Kevin makes while at play – and the comments we have received from parents, guardians and carers have been incredibly positive.” As Oliver’s mum commented: “My son (10 months) was spellbound from start to finish! His face was full of amazement for the whole 25 minutes, as were the faces of his friends” and Alfie’s aunt: “My 18 month old nephew loved it. He giggled throughout and loved having his own piece of blue shiny paper to play with (and try to eat!)”. Out of the Blue is on at Chapter in Cardiff 13-20 December (excluding 16 December).
