Screening at Aberystwyth Arts Centre on Tuesday 27 November, 6pm. The highly acclaimed Filter Theatre takes the pioneering step of touring its feature film WHAT YOU WILL this autumn to Bristol, Poole and Aberystwyth. WHAT YOU WILL is a tragi-comedy drama shot as if it is a fly-on-the-wall documentary. The film-makers Guy de Beaujeu and Simon Reade devised the scenario with Filter whose performers then improvised on-camera, often in one take. Intercut into this unfolding behind-the-scenes drama is live, multi-camera footage of Filter’s hugely successful Royal Shakespeare Company co-production of Twelfth Night, or What You Will, directed by Sean Holmes, on tour in the West Country in Autumn 2010. The film stars Filter’s Artistic Directors Oliver Dimsdale (He Knew He Was Right) and Ferdy Roberts and the Twelfth Night company who include Poppy Miller (Emma, Attachments). There is also a cameo appearance by Zoë Tapper (Cheerful Weather for the Wedding, Stage Beauty) and interviews with Romola Garai (The Hour, The Crimson Petal and the White) and Dominic West (The Hour, The Wire). Edited by Bristol-based documentary maker Dan Lincoln, the film has an original score by regular Filter collaborators and members of the London Snorkelling Team band Tom Haines & Ross Hughes. The film’s director, Simon Reade, says: “The overriding story of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night informs the offstage life of the people in WHAT YOU WILL: the egotist who gets his comeuppance (Malvolio); the confusion of cross-dressing ingénue (Viola/Sebastian); the drunk Lord of Misrule whose authority is emasculated (Sir Toby Belch); the all-seeing, all-knowing, tell-it-as-it-is Fool (Feste).” WHAT YOU WILL begins as the story of ‘Sea in a Sieve Theatre Company’, a successful touring ensemble. But the film crew witness an unfolding backstage drama, driven by the personal tensions and financial pressures on a group of people who have lived and worked and slept together for over a decade, and fallen out with each other all along the way. As the road movie progresses, it opens a backstage door into the world of theatre, while at the same time exposing the aggravations of all our lives in extremis. WHAT YOU WILL is certificate 15 – it contains strong language. To book at Aberystwyth Arts Centre contact the ticket office on 01970 62 32 32 or go online www.aber.ac.uk/artscentre |
