50 Days to Go Until Y BontThere’s only 50 days to go until Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru’s spectacular production to celebrate 50 years since the famous protest on Trefechan Bridge will be held in Aberystwyth. Starting from Aberystwyth Arts Centre, ‘Y Bont’ (The Bridge) will be a one off performance on Sunday 03 February 2013 on and around the streets and cafes of Aberystwyth. This unique production will be a combination of live theatre and film, digital technology and social media. The audience will witness live performances on the streets; watch video clips here and there and witness the excitement of the original protest 50 years ago. There are only 500 tickets for sale for this one-day performance and Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru urges everyone to buy their tickets well in advance to avoid disappointment. Tickets are £15 for adults and £12 for students and pensioners and can be purchased from Aberystwyth Arts Centre on 01267 623232 or at aberystwythartscentre.co.uk. Y Bont is co-written by Catrin Dafydd, Ceri Elen, Angharad Tomos and Arwel Gruffydd. Arwel is also the director of the project. The authors have already interviewed various protestors that were on Trefechan Bridge 50 years ago as well as others who witnessed the protest. Their memories will form the basis of the script. Y Bont is a creative partnership between Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru, S4C, Green Bay Media and Aberystwyth Arts Centre with the co-operation of Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol, Glamorgan University, Aberystwyth University and University of Wales Trinity Saint David’s. As well as three professional actors, over 60 students from the three universities will be taking part in the production as actors and musicians and Arwel Gruffydd and Sarah Bickerton, the assistant director, have already been working with them to develop various elements of the work. Dylan Richards will be directing the television elements that will be broadcast later in the year on S4C. Arwel Gruffydd, Artistic Director of Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru said: “I don’t think that such an event as this has ever happened before in the Welsh language. One professional performance of a new play to celebrate one very important event in our history; the Welsh language national theatre collaborating with students from three Welsh universities; and a dramatic event that combines theatre, film, TV and digital technologies. He continued: “The preparations so far have been very exciting and it has been a privilege to discuss and record the accounts of those people that were there as part of the protest, when a group of determined young people began a tradition that would last 50 years of standing up for their rights and breaking the law when they believed that the democratic route was a barrier to their ambition of securing a future for their language.” For further information about Y Bont go to theatr.com or follow Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru on twitter @TheatrGenCymru #Ybont. |
