LEGAL & GENERAL SUPPORT LOCAL TALENT IN NEWPORT

Legal & General, The Riverfront and the Pentalk Lab have joined forces to create an exciting new music academy to nurture new local talent and provide free workshops to four local community groups. The project will culminate with an exciting showcase performance for four local musicians on the cusp of fame and performances by the young people involved in the community groups. This showcase will be at The Riverfront on Thursday 24 January 2013 and will guest star LADY LESHURR.

Four young musicians have been given free recording studio time and expert guidance from Pentalk Lab producer DJ Jamie Winchester to complete their albums. All four will take part in photo and video shoots and will act as mentors to the community groups also involved in the project to help inspire and influence them in developing their own talents. The four artists are 22 year old artist FERNQUEST, 21 year old EATON MC (Rhys Eaton), MISS A and ASHANTI WEBB, both 26 year old singer/songwriters – all from Newport.

FERNQUEST has thought provoking lyrics driven by social observation and crosses a number of musical styles although is firmly based in the Grime genre. EATON raps over grime beats and more recently more of a hip hop style and writes mainly about day to day life and addresses social issues in the UK. MISS A writes music that is soulful, funky and addictive, bringing an American soul flavour to the UK. ASHANTI WEBB had success on the 2009 X Factor reaching the ‘boot camp’ stage.

Four community groups will be participating in free workshops and performing in the January showcase; St Julian’s School pupils, young people from Eastern Europe, young people from Newport’s Community First areas and young disabled people from Serennu Youth Club.

Michelle Perez, the Marketing Manager at The Riverfront commented, “We are very pleased that Legal & General have been able to support The Riverfront and just some of the local talent that has been coming out of the Pentalk Lab and The Riverfront. We hope that it will be the start of a long and fruitful relationship for all of us.”

CSR Manager for Legal & General, Lynne Sheehy said, "We are delighted to be working with The Riverfront and supporting such an innovative project which allows young people to develop their creative skills and showcase their talents in the community."

The Riverfront and Legal & General have received an investment from Arts and Kids Cymru to develop their creative partnership. Arts & Kids Cymru is an Arts and Business Cymru initiative made possible by funding from the Arts Council of Wales. This extra investment meant that we could extend the Music Academy project to a group of young disabled people.

The live showcase of all these involved in the Legal & General Music Academy will have a guest appearance by LADY LESHURR and will be at 7.30pm on Thursday 24 January 2013. Lady Leshurr is a female MC/singer and producer, who has featured on tracks with Tinie Tempah, Wiley and Lethal B. Currently the talk of the UKs urban scene, Leshurr now has the support of the UK’s premiere hip hop DJs, Tim Westwood, Mista Jam, Target and Cameo.
