Welsh siblings star in the Roald Dahl classic James and the Giant Peach at the New Theatre, Cardiff this half-term |
Acting is clearly in the blood in Rhys and Sioned Saunders’ family as the talented brother and sister duo are set to star in Roald Dahl’s classic story James and the Giant Peach when it visits the New Theatre, Cardiff from Tuesday 12 – Saturday 16 February. Thrilled to be back on home turf when The Birmingham Stage Company production visits Cardiff, Rhys and Sioned play the Earthworm and Aunt Spiker/Miss Spider respectively in this wonderful show which will thrill young theatregoers. Born in Neath, South Wales, Rhys trained at the Rose Bruford College graduating with a BA (Hons) in Actor Musicianship and Sioned trained as a flautist at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. He made his professional acting debut playing the part of Vince in Never Saw The Day for a tour with the Walking Forward Theatre Company. His other theatre work includes Merrie England (Finborough Theatre), The Sinking of The Arandora Star (Dylan Thomas Theatre), A Feast of Festive Fun, Twilight Tales, Tall Tales (Clwyd Theatre Cymru), The Jungle Book (National Tour), The Snow Queen (National Tour), Frida and Diego – A Love Story (NYTW). Sioned’s professional acting debut was in a production of Peter Shaffer's Amadeus with Matthew Kelly playing Salieri. Her other theatre work includes Robin Hood and The Babes in The Wood (New Wolsey Theatre, Ipswich) Chess (Princess of Wales Theatre, Toronto & UK Tour) Bagheera in Jungle Book (Lyric Theatre, Belfast), Sunset Boulevard (Comedy Theatre) Animal Farm (West Yorkshire Playhouse), HONK! (Watermill Theatre, Newbury), Only The Brave (New Theatre, Cardiff), Tickledom – Fluella The Ice Witch (Weston Studio, WMC). She also appeared as Shelley in an episode of Casualty (BBC TV). Speaking about life as an actor Sioned says “You get to see lots of the country you wouldn't normally visit, getting paid to do it!” She goes on to say “I hate living out of a suitcase though! I don’t like not having all my stuff with me...I'm a girl, how do I know what I want to wear in 2 weeks time?!!” Joining Rhys and Sioned is another welsh actor, Iwan Tudor who plays the Grasshopper. They are also joined by Tom Gillies as James, Claire Greenway, Chris Lindon and Giovanna Ryan. James and the Giant Peach tells the story of James, a lonely young boy who lives with Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker, the most revolting Aunts in England. They make him work and slave and never let him play with other children. Then one day he meets a mystical old man who gives him a bag that contains the strongest magic the world has ever known. When James spills the bag near an old peach tree, the most incredible things start to happen and James embarks on the adventure of a lifetime with an amazing group of characters. The Birmingham Stage Company are famous for their acclaimed productions of Roald Dahl stories. In their twenty year history they have staged six Roald Dahl books and many other children’s stories including The Jungle Book and The Horrible Histories.
