‘There nothing quite like speaking to someone who actually did it’, thought Louche Theatre when researching their latest production, ‘ Lilies on the Land’ This remarkable piece of theatre tells the gripping but charming story of four girls who enlist for the Womens Land Army in World War 2. They were fortunate enough to learn of one such lady who lives locally. And Joyce Izon, 89, was delighted to come along and tell the company her own story. She worked in Norwich as a photographic assistant before joining the Land Army, when she was sent to a farm in Norfolk. When she arrived she was shocked to discover her billet had no electricity or running water, and a very basic toilet ! It was her first time away from home and her first time on a train as she left Norwich to work on the land. She had chosen the Land Army to do her bit for the war effort, as her elder brother had been killed in the war shortly before and she didn’t want to upset her parents by working in a more dangerous munitions factory. The worst jobs she remembers from those days was mucking out the cow shed and harvesting sugar beet that were frozen stiff in the Winter months. She however very much enjoyed the corn and barley harvests. It was whilst working on the land she met her future husband. Louche Theatre’s Director, Harry Durnall said “ It was quite amazing to listen to Joyce’s stories, as so many of the incidents she re-called , occur in this captivating play” Louche Theatre will be presenting ‘Lilies on the Land’ at the Morlan Centre, Queens Road, Aberystwyth from Friday 19th April to Sunday 21st April , followed by performances at The Tabernacle, Machynlleth on the 27th April and the Dragon Theatre, Barmouth on the 4th May.
