The legendary Steptoe and Son revived for the stage comes to Sherman Theatre |
Cornwall’s Kneehigh Theatre and West Yorkshire Playhouse have joined forces to present the legendary, Steptoe and Son which will be at Sherman Theatre from 9-13 April. Adapted from the legendary scripts of Galton and Simpson, Steptoe and Son charts the surprising dance of father and son. Darkly comic and deeply moving, this is a 20th century icon, reimagined for a new generation. Adapted and directed by Kneehigh Theatre’s Emma Rice, Steptoe and Son received high praise when it toured in 2012. Emma Rice said: “The words, situations and basic genius of the scripts are all the work and imagination of Ray Galton and Alan Simpson. I laughed and wept in equal measures as I made my way through the scripts that make up the Steptoe and Son cannon. The work is deeper, darker and more intricate than I’d ever realised, watching as a child.” The play is based on the original comic television show from the 1960s which follows the tale of two men, father and son Albert and Harold Steptoe who after two world wars wake up every morning to the same old, same old, sickening sight of each other. Albert is a dirty old rag and bone man and his son, Harold dreams of ambition but is continually prevented. Emma continues: “I’ve tried to enable and reveal the heart-breaking and perfectly observed characters that had generations glued to their TV’s for over a decade. I am so lucky! I feel I am walking through history: my parents’, my grand parents’, and my own. It has been a chance of a lifetime to dive into such an iconic and important body of work.” Still set in the 1960s, Kneehigh’s version will feature all the great music from that era including The Beatles, Roy Orbison and Cliff Richard. Steptoe and Son will be at Sherman Cymru, Cardiff on 9-13 April, 7.30pm in Theatre 1. Matinee performance on 11 April at 2.30pm Tickets are £15-£25, concessions £2 off. Under 25s half price tickets.
