FLUELLEN THEATRE COMPANY in association with the GRAND THEATRE, SWANSEASwansea-based Fluellen Theatre Company returns to the Main Stage of the city’s Grand Theatre on March 7th with a new production of one of the greatest of classic comedies, Harold Brighouse’s timeless HOBSON`S CHOICE. It is Salford,1880, and Henry Horatio Hobson, widower, boot-shop proprietor and good customer of The Moonraker`s Inn, has three daughters. He would like to marry off two of them, but he thinks that the eldest, Maggie, is well past it and should stay at home and look after her father. But the strong-willed Maggie knows that the success of her father’s business is really down to Willie Mossop who is seemingly gormless, but brilliant in when it comes to making boots, and she starts making plans… Written in 1916, the play was an immediate success and has been regularly performed throughout the world ever since. The play’s director, Peter Richards, has always loved it. He says, “it is a wonderfully constructed play and full of wit. But it is not afraid of taking on a few issues, too, with its swipes at class and gender politics. But, more than anything else, it is good family fun and makes for a hugely entertaining visit to the theatre.” Kevin Johns` great comic timing will be seen at its best in the central role of Hobson, a part he has long relished playing, “It’s a bit of an ambition realised” says Kevin, fresh from his 13th consecutive Grand Panto. “The character is so well observed in the writing and it gives me lots of scope for some physical comedy, too.” The superb Jessica Sandry (soon to take on the role of Marilyn Monroe for Fluellen in the summer) will be playing Maggie and Aled Herbert, making his Fluellen debut, plays Willie Mossop. With a new set designed by Holly McCarthy and a great supporting cast that includes Matthew Bool, Bethan Johns, Claire Novelli, Aiden Peppin and Jennifer Wallen this should prove to be unmissable theatre.
