Cardiff Theatre Company to recreate Shakespeare’s world in a theatre experience like no other

Sherman Cymru’s Company 5 will be performing, To Live, To Love, To Be at Sherman Cymru from 17-20 April.

Inspired by the life of William Shakespeare, this newly commissioned play by D J Britton is based on what his thoughts, memories and imaginings may have been to shape his plays. What made him the great writer that he was? The 13 member cast will perform on and around a 6 meter revolving table blending beautiful imagery with down-to-earth storytelling and poetic humour.
“It really is an experience like no other,” says the director of To Live, To Love, To Be, Phil Mackenzie. “The company will be sat around this slow turning 6 meter table... It is like a séance, summoning the ghosts of Shakespeare’s past.”

“Audiences will be sat around the edge of the theatre looking down onto the performance as if looking on to the mysterious world of the afterlife.”

As well as this unusual set, the sound score has been constructed using only pieces of music that have been composed in response to the work of Shakespeare. This is being created by well known Welsh composer John Rea.

Commissioned to write To Live, To Love, To Be for Company 5 was writer D J Britton, who has adapted Shakespearian plays including Sherman Cymru’s site specific version of Measure for Measure. He also recently wrote a play about Lloyd George entitled, The Wizard, the Goat and the Man Who Won the War.

Company 5 is a theatre company that meets weekly at Sherman Cymru and consists of 13 members who are aged 19-61 from various parts of Cardiff and South Wales. The company was set up in 2008 as an extension of the very successful Youth Theatre programme which Sherman Cymru has been running for over 20 years.

Phillip Mackenzie said:
“Company 5 gives those people an opportunity to learn about the theatre and develop their acting skills. The programme allows anyone from any background to have the opportunity to have a go at acting. No previous experience is necessary.”

To Live, To Love, To Be will be at Sherman Cymru, Cardiff from 17-20 April, 8pm. Tickets are £8, concessions £2 off and half price tickets for under 25s. For further information and tickets, please contact Sherman Cymru on 029 2064 6900 or visit www.shermancymru.co.uk.
