U.Dance Cymru – a showcase of youth dance in Wales.

U.Dance Cymru – a showcase of youth dance in Wales. Over 80 young dancers will descend upon Galeri, Caernarfon on Sunday 24 March for U.Dance Cymru – a showcase of youth dance in Wales.

Youth dance groups from Gwynedd to Powys are already busy creating and rehearsing their pieces for what promises to be a dynamic celebration of young people dancing! Between them, the nine participating groups cover a range of different dance styles – creative, street, dance theatre, contemporary – offering something for everyone. They include some dancers who are relatively new to performance and others who are about to embark upon professional dance training, and represent a number of different regions across North Wales.

U.Dance Cymru is the second event of its kind in Wales, and builds upon the success of U.Dance Wales in 2012, which attracted 200 participants from across the nation.

Participating groups in 2013 are: Yr Academi / The Academy (Conwy), Autonomy dance group (from Step One Performing Arts School,Conwy), Dyffryn Conwy Youth Dance (from Dawns i Bawb,Conwy), C.U.E Performers Dance (Conwy), Pwllheli School of Dance and Performing Arts (Gwynedd), Penmaenmawr Youth Dance (from Dawns i Bawb, Conwy), NEW Dance Youth Company (Denbighshire, Flintshire, Wrexham), Step Out  (North Powys), Cwmni Dawns LegaC (Carmarthenshire).

National Youth Dance Wales (NYDW) will also perform an adapted extract from Closer choreographed by the dancers with NYDW Artistic Director, Errol White, which premiered to enthusiastic audiences at Sherman Cymru (Cardiff) and Clwyd Theatr Cymru (Mold) last summer.

During the course of the day, prior to the evening performance, the groups will have an opportunity to see each others’ work. “Increasingly, young dancers are being encouraged to see other young dancers dancing. It demonstrates that they are part of a thriving and vibrant, Wales-wide youth dance community. U.Dance Cymru goes a step further in that it also connects them with young dancers from England, Scotland and Northern Ireland via the U.Dance 2013 Festival, which takes place in Leeds this summer” says Suzanne Robinson, Development Co-ordinator for National Youth Dance Wales (NYDW).
