WAKING EXPLOITS PRESENT WELSH PREMIERE OF DENNIS KELLY'S DARKLY COMIC PLAY LOVE AND MONEY |
Following the sell–out, critically acclaimed stagings of Caryl Churchill’s Serious Money in 2011 and Simon Stephens’s Pornography in 2012, young Welsh company Waking Exploits return with Love and Money, Dennis Kelly’s (Utopia, Matilda the Musical, Pulling) investigation into debt and desire. David is online, hoping to kindle a new relationship. Love is only a click away, but a shocking admission begins to unravel his past piece by chilling piece. Jess loves David. Jess loves credit. Believing happiness can be bought in a world of easy finance and materialism, possessions become irresistible. But at what cost? Funny yet heart wrenching, Kelly’s darkly comic play portrays a dislocated view of the world we live in, the risks we face, and the lengths we go to in search of happiness. Kelly’s play, described as “One of the best new plays of the year” by The Telegraph in 2006, presents a vivid portrait of our times, exploring a tale of debt, desire and love against the backdrop of Britain’s materialistic and credit-ravaged culture. The cast of Love and Money includes Rebecca Harries, Sara Lloyd-Gregory, Gareth Milton, Keiron Self, Joanna Simpkins and Will Thorp, who will be directed by former Associate Director of Theatre Royal Stratford East, Ryan Romain. Ryan comments: “There are many things which interest me with this play, the first being its primary themes, ‘love’ and ‘money’. These universal themes are something the majority of human beings can relate to, whether it be our quest for love or our pursuit of money. Can you be in love and financially insecure? Does being wealthy reflect favourably on your relationship? In a world where your self worth is defined by how much ‘stuff’ you have, is there a way to beat the system? The issues which are raised throughout the play are very relevant and pertinent for today's audiences and with all good drama, the more the story unfolds, the less black and white the characters’ decisions seem. The structure and world of the play that Dennis Kelly has created excites me. It's an ingenious way to present a story. The energy, wit and humour which encapsulates what can be construed as a difficult topic is a testament to Dennis Kelly's writing. The fact that one moment your mouth is aghast with horror and the next you are rolling around with laughter, makes for an immersive, entertaining night at the theatre. I can't wait to see audience reactions.” Love and Money opens at Chapter in Cardiff on 10 April before commencing a three week tour of Wales.
