MUSIC THEATRE WALES NOMINATED FOR AN OLIVIER AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT IN OPERA |
Music Theatre Wales, and its production and commissioning partner Scottish Opera, have been nominated for an Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Opera. The nomination is for their productions of two one-act operas, In the Locked Room by Welsh composer Huw Watkins and Scottish composer Stuart MacRae's Ghost Patrol. The programme opened at the 2012 Edinburgh International Festival, where it was warmly received, subsequently touring to Glasgow, and to venues in Wales and England, including the Royal Opera House. In the Locked Room was directed by MTW's Michael McCarthy and Ghost Patrol was directed by Matthew Richardson and both operas were conducted by MTW's Michael Rafferty. Music Theatre Wales, which this year celebrates its 25th anniversary, is becoming used to award ceremonies: earlier this month Ghost Patrol won a South Bank Sky Arts Award in the Opera category, and in 2011 Michael McCarthy's production of Mark-Anthony Turnage's Greek won a TMA Theatre Award - also for Outstanding Achievement in Opera. The Oliviers - unquestionably the most prestigious UK theatre awards - celebrate the best of theatre, dance and opera. This year's nomination list in the different categories include such international names as Helen Mirren (nomination: Best Actress), James McAvoy (nomination: Best Actor) and Stephen Daldry (nomination: Best Director). In the Outstanding Achievement in Opera category Music Theatre Wales has some formidable rivals, including English National Opera's Principal Conductor Edward Gardner and tenor Bryan Hymel for productions at the Royal Opera House. The winners will be revealed at a ceremony at the Royal Opera House on April 28. |
