Local ‘Little Old Ladies’ selected to make their debut on the New Theatre stage in The Ladykillers

Local ‘Little Old Ladies’ selected to make their debut on the New Theatre stage in The Ladykillers Ahead of the arrival of the award-winning West End comedy The Ladykillers at the New Theatre, Cardiff this April, theatre staff have been on look out for four local 'little old ladies' to appear as extras in the show! The search was successful and in fact, they didn’t need to look very far as one of the soon-to-be stars is their very own Group Sales Organiser, Chris Blackler.

The local ladies, referred to in the script as a ‘swarm of old ladies’, join various members of the company (costumed accordingly!) and have been recruited to appear in a key part of the show which bookends the interval. This is when Professor Marcus and his associates are forced into giving Mrs Wilberforce and her unknowing friends a concert.

Chris, who has been at the New Theatre for 20 years says of her stage appearance:

"It is always exciting being up on the stage of the theatre that I work in. It is also an interesting experience to have the audience reaction from the actors' point of view rather than being a member of the audience or being in the auditorium and seeing how parties are reacting. It will be a great week and one enjoys meeting the cast."

Father Ted writer Graham Linehan’s hit adaptation of the classic 1955 Ealing comedy The Ladykillers comes to the New Theatre, Cardiff from Tuesday 9 – Saturday 13 April. Starring Michele Dotrice (Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em) as Mrs Wilberforce alongside Paul Bown, Clive Mantle (Casualty, Holby City), Chris McCalphy, Cliff Parisi (EastEnders) and William Troughton, The Ladykillers has recently won Best New Comedy at the Whatsonstage.com Awards.

The Ladykillers tells the story of the eccentric little old lady Mrs Wilberforce who lives alone with her parrot, General Gordon, in a strange lopsided house in King’s Cross. Her life is turned upside down by the arrival of Professor Marcus and his four friends, who between them make up the most unlikely group of criminals. Posing as amateur musicians, Professor Marcus and his gang rent rooms in Mrs Wilberforce’s house. The villains plot to involve her unwittingly in Marcus’ brilliantly conceived heist job. The police are left stumped, but Mrs Wilberforce becomes wise to their ruse and Marcus concludes that there is only one way to keep the old lady quiet. With only her parrot to help her, Mrs W. is alone with five desperate misfits and the plan starts to unravel in spectacular and hilarious fashion.

· The UK and Ireland tour of The Ladykillers follows the critically acclaimed West End run at London’s Gielgud Theatre. The production was nominated for five awards in the 2012 Laurence Olivier Awards, including Best New Play, Best Direction, Best Set Design, Best Sound Design and Best Actress in a Play for Marcia Warren.

· This stage production has been adapted by Graham Linehan, best known for being the writer behind TV comedies Father Ted and The I.T. Crowd. Director Sean Foley is a multi award-winning stage director whose work in the West End includes The Play What I Wrote, Do You Come Here Often, Ducktastic, Pinter’s People and Joe Orton’s What The Butler Saw.

The Ladykillers is at the New Theatre, Cardiff from Tuesday 9 – Saturday 13 April. Tickets are £8.00 - £30.00 and can booked via the Box Office on 029 2087 8889 or online* at www.newtheatrecardiff.co.uk.
