The award winning series, The Met: Live in HD wraps up its 2012-2013 season on Saturday 27 April 2013 at 5pm with a performance of David McVicar’s critically acclaimed production of Giulio Cesare, which screens at Theatr Mwldan on Sunday 28 April at 1.00pm. Harry Bicket, whos previous Live in HD appearances include last seasons Rodelinda and this seasons La Clemenza di Tito, will conduct. Following a new production of Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda seen Live in HD in January, the broadcast of Giulio Cesare marks the second of McVicar’s productions to be broadcast Live in HD from the Met this season. The production, which was first seen at Glyndebourne in 2005, stars David Daniels in the eponymous role of Caesar. Daniels, who will be joined by Natalie Dessay as the exotic queen Cleopatra, first sang in McVicar’s production in 2006. They are joined by Dublin born Patricia Bardon and Christophe Dumaux, Cornelia and Tolomeo respectively, who also sang in the original production. Alice Coote, who made her Live in HD debut in 2008 when she sang Hansel in Hansel and Gretel, joins the cast in the role of Sesto. Heralded by the San Francisco Chronicle as the ‘superlative British Mezzo’, Alice Coote’s voice has been described by the Times as 'breath-taking in its sheer conviction and subtlety of perception'. She has sung with some of the world’s most distinguished opera companies and given recitals at major international venues including Carnegie Hall. Italian Baritone Guido Loconsolo makes his Met début singing the role of Achilla. Giulio Cesare is McVicar’s all-time favourite work, and his inventive, post-colonial production was praised by the Independent as being ‘hugely entertaining’ and by the Guardian as ‘witty, sexy and tragic’. McVicar’s 19th Century imperialist setting draws theatrical inspiration from Baroque to Bollywood and everything in between. Considered by many to be his finest work, Handel’s opera seria focuses on the love story between Julius Caesar and Cleopatra, and took London by storm when first performed in 1724. Last season, The Met: Live in HD transmissions were seen by approximately 3 million opera lovers worldwide and this year have been transmitted to more than 1,900 theatres in 64 countries around the world, including 148 cinemas in the UK. For the first time, this season’s Live in HD went out to Brazil, Dubai, Ecuador, Guatemala, India, Jamaica, Madagascar, Montenegro, Qatar and Serbia. Tickets for Met Opera: Live in HD are £18 (£16 concessions) and can be booked via Mwldan’s Box Office on 01239 621200, online at www.mwldan.co.uk, or via smartphones by visiting mwldan.ticketsolve.com/mobile. |
