Summer 2013 season at the New Theatre Cardiff announced

Opening the season is the terrifying live theatre experience, The Woman in Black which runs from Monday 29 April – Saturday 4 May. Critically acclaimed and inspired by the world of film noir, audiences will be transported into a ghostly world where the borders between reality and make believe blur when a lawyer engages a young actor to help him tell his petrifying story.

It’s Spot’s Birthday Party and everyone’s invited from Thursday 2 – Saturday 4 May! The famous little puppy celebrates with his friends Steve the Monkey, Helen the Hippo and Tom the Crocodile, plus Spot’s mum and dad, Sally and Sam and special guest Marco the Rabbit Magician. Fun, music, songs, games and theatrical magic aplenty in this colourful show for little ones. Suggested age 2+.

The team behind the hit show Dreamboats and Petticoats brings Save the Last Dance for Me to the New Theatre stage from Tuesday 7 – Saturday 11 May. This time audiences will travel back to the magic of the early sixties in this nostalgic, feel-good show. Includes hit songs Sweets for my Sweet, A Teenager in Love and Save the Last Dance for Me.

The world premiere stage adaptation of Ellis Peters’ famous medieval sleuth Cadfael: The Virgin in the Ice is presented by Middleground Theatre from Tuesday 14 – Saturday 18 May. Made famous by Derek Jacobi in the hit television series, Brother Cadfael embarks on a dangerous quest to find missing refugees - an orphan boy and his beautiful sister, and a young nun. Stars Gareth Thomas (Blake 7), Richard Walsh (London’s Burning), James Palmer (River City) and Rupert Baker.

Everybody Needs Somebody to Love, Think and Gimme Some Lovin’ are just some of the great songs that will have everyone Shaking a Tailfeather at The Blues Brothers from Tuesday 21 – Saturday 25 May. Presented by Dan Aykroyd and Judith Belushi.

Cardiff’s Orbit Theatre presents the classic Disney’s Beauty and the Beast from Wednesday 29 May – Sunday 2 June. This magical show has comedy, romance, beautiful songs and spectacular dancing …the perfect recipe for half-term family fun.

After a triumphant West End season and winner of the Best Play Revival at the Whatsonstage.com awards, Lindsay Posner’s acclaimed production of one of the most popular plays ever written is touring the UK. Mike Leigh’s Abigail’s Party is here from Tuesday 4 – Saturday 8 June. Beverly and husband Laurence have invited round the new neighbours…cue the social gathering from hell. Hilarity, drama and tragedy ensue in this comedy classic starring Samuel James, Katie Lightfoot, Martin Marquez, Emily Raymond and Hannah Waterman.

Dora fans will be delighted when Nickelodeon’s Dora the Explorer LIVE! arrives from Friday 14 – Sunday 16 June. In the Search for the City of Lost Toys, Dora has lost her teddy bear Osito, and the search is on to retrieve him! With the help of the audience, Map, Backpack, Boots and Diego, Dora uses her map-reading, counting, musical and language skills to reach the City of the Lost Toys. Suggested age 2+.

The greatest detective in the world returns in an all-new mystery from Tuesday 18 – Saturday 22 June, Sherlock Holmes: The Best Kept Secret. Visiting Cardiff prior to the West End, this production is a brand new case for the legendary sleuth, full of intrigue, passion, deception and revelations.

Strictly… stars Vincent Simone and Flavia Cacace star in their stunning, Olivier award-nominated show Midnight Tango from Monday 24 – Saturday 29 June. Having dazzled audiences for seven series of the hit BBC show, they bring their breathtaking choreography, fiery chemistry and explosive Tango routines to the stage in this spectacular show that takes people on journey into the heart of Buenos Aires.

Children’s favourite Grandpa in My Pocket brings all the favourite characters to life for little ones from Thursday 4 – Sunday 7 July. Jason and Jemima embark on a pirate adventure in search of treasure with Sunnysands Pirate and Horatio Heave Ho. When things go wrong the shrinking cap goes on and it’s Grandpa to the rescue! Suggested Age 4+.

Richard O’Brien’s hugely successful The Rocky Horror Show returns to Cardiff for another week of fun and frolics from Monday 8 – Saturday 13 July. Rhydian as Rocky, Oliver Thornton as Frank N Furter, Dani Harmer as Janet and Sam Attwater as Brad belt out all the classics including Sweet Transvestite, Damn It Janet and of course, Time Warp in this 40th Anniversary production. Not suitable for children.

Following on from his role as Queen Passionella in last year’s New Theatre panto, Sleeping Beauty the one and only Ceri Dupree brings his One Man, 21 Women show, The Faaaaaabulous Ceri Dupree Show from Friday 19 – Saturday 20 July. Ceri brings an evening packed full of comedy, amazing vocal impersonations and jaw-dropping costumes as he pays tribute to a host of glamorous leading ladies including Cher, Lady Gaga, Adele and The Queen! Suggested age 14+.

English Youth Ballet returns with their dramatic production of Giselle from Friday 26 – Saturday 27 July. With enchanting and sumptuous costumes, spectacular dancing and beautiful scenery, this production gives aspiring young dancers an opportunity to perform within a professional setting.

The monstrous West End success The Gruffalo’s Child is here from Friday 2 – Sunday 4 August. Young theatregoers will love Julia Donaldson’s award-winning sequel in this magical, musical adaptation where the Gruffalo’s Child ignores her father’s warning and goes in search of the Big Bad Mouse. Suggested age 3+. Summerdance 2013 celebrates exceptional young dancers and musicians in two enchanting dance productions, Orient and Cascade on Saturday 10 August.

A fresh cast of burlesque all-stars are set to thrill audiences on Saturday 7 September in An Evening of Burlesque following the acclaimed 2012 performance. This riotous romp into the bizarre world of cutting-edge variety is full of exotic couture costumes, wicked it and slick choreography. Suitable for adults only.

The team behind Bred in Heaven and Whose Coat is that Jacket? bring their brand new comedy I’ll Be There Now in a Minute! to the stage from Wednesday 11 – Saturday 14 September. Trimsaran meets Tenerife with outrageous consequences when the Williams family takes their first foreign holiday for 30 years!

From Thursday 19 – Saturday 21 September comes the sensational one man show Formby starring Ewan Wardrop. Formby is a fascinating, touching and funny look at the stars’ extraordinary talent and features many of his classic hits brilliantly recreated by Wardrop on his ukulele, including When I’m Cleaning Windows, TT Races and many more.

A brand new production of the hit musical Seven Brides for Seven Brothers starring Dancing on Ice winner and EastEnders star Sam Attwater opens from Tuesday 24 – Saturday 28 September. This toe-tapping show full of high energy dance numbers, wonderful songs and colourful sets is sure to put a spring in anyone’s step!

Based on E R Braithwaite’s autobiography, To Sir, With Love (Tuesday 1 – Saturday 5 October) tells the story of Ricky Braithwaite’s journey from fighter pilot to teacher in a tough but progressive school in an East End school. Made famous by the 1967 film starring Sidney Poitier, To Sir, With Love, brilliantly adapted by Ayub Khan-Din (East is East), explores what it means to be black in post war Britain.

The hit West End show Thriller returns to Cardiff from Monday 7 – Saturday 12 October. A spectacular concert that celebrates the thrilling career of the world’s greatest entertainer, Thriller brings to life the sensational dancing and distinctive sound of Michael and the Jackson 5.

Cardiff’s Orbit Theatre returns with the multi-award-winning musical A Chorus Line from Tuesday 15 – Saturday 19 October. Following the highs and the heartbreak of aspiring dancers at a Broadway audition, A Chorus Line is a musical for anyone who has ever had a dream.

Olivier award-winning and Oscar nominated star Tom Conti returns to the New Theatre as James Highwood in the gripping courtroom drama Rough Justice from Tuesday 22 – Saturday 26 October. The tables turn as documentary maker and Television journalist James Highwood finds himself being challenged by the British Justice system as he is brought to court on a charge of murder.

Two half-term treats in the form of Cirque du Hilarious (Monday 28 October) and Peppa Pig (Wednesday 30 – Thursday 31 October) are set to thrill the whole family with their fun-filled shows.

The international smash hit show New Jersey Nights comes to Cardiff as part of their world tour from Tuesday 5 – Saturday 9 November. A spectacular celebration of the music of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, this nostalgic musical features all of The Four Seasons’ greatest hits including Sherry, Big Girls Don’t Cry, Walk Like a Man and many more.

Young theatregoers can discover why penguins don’t get spots, or why the moon doesn’t wander off, and the answer to many more pressing questions in Horrible Science from Tuesday 19 – Saturday 23 November. Using actors and jaw-dropping 3D Bogglevsion, this astounding show from the producers of Horrible Histories is guaranteed to thrill the whole family! Ages 6+.

The New Theatre ends the year with their GIANT of a pantomime, Jack and the Beanstalk starring Julian Clary from Saturday 14 December 2013 – Sunday 19 January 2014. Featuring the usual magical mix of comedy, outrageous costumes, fabulous sets, and a huge beanstalk, the New Theatre is the place to get Christmas underway!
