The Park and Dare Theatre continues its Centenary Celebrations in an unrepeatable performance - Flights of Fancy. The Park and Dare Theatre in Treorchy continues its centenary celebrations taking audiences on a spectacular journey through its 100 year history with an exhilarating production, Flights of Fancy/Hedfa’r Dychymyg. Flights of Fancy/ Hedfa’r Dychymyg will tell the story of this landmark building during the historic events of the last century in a feast for the senses and an unrepeatable experience for audiences. Audiences will see the Park & Dare Theatre as they have never seen it before and are unlikely to see it again. A cast of dozens including dancers, singers and musicians will take audiences through the last hundred years and then propel them into the future, beginning from the moment the audience enter the building’s departure lounge (ordinarily the theatre foyer) and collect their flight passes! Audiences will then take their seats on the stage of the theatre auditorium and see “Flights of Fancy/Hedfa’r Dychymyg” unfold before them from ground level on a stage set over the stalls seats to the heights of the upper circle. Flights of Fancy brings together the performers from community performance groups of all ages from 11 to 95 from the area, with the combined direction of National Dance Company Wales, the ambitious artistic vision of Artistic Director Phil Williams and an explosion of colour and couture costume by fashion and costume designer Paul Shriek. The music of composer Jak Poore will also feature in an original music composition, a commission by Welsh National Opera setting the backdrop for the second half of the performance. The ambitious project has encompassed music, fashion and movement to convey time and events from wartime, through the decades. Forties style harmony trio The Siren Sisters will guide the audience through their journey with songs such as Novello’s Keep the Home Fires Burning through to hits by David Bowie and Frankie Goes to Hollywood along the way, even including an acapella version of the Dr Who theme tune, acknowledging the theatre’s leading role in the filming of the ‘Daleks in Manhattan’ episode from the highly successful BBC Wales Dr.Who Series. Possibilities and aspirations for the future will also be explored through music and performance for a building that has always played such a special role in Wales. Rhondda Cynon Taf Theatres have created an unforgettable commemorative event. Cllr Robert Bevan, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Sustainable Development, Leisure and Tourism, said: “Flights of Fancy promises to be both an entertaining and unique theatrical experience. What an amazing way to celebrate the centenary of the Park & Dare Theatre - by turning its audiences into time travellers. The Park & Dare has a proud history, having served its community well for the past 100 years. Now is the time to celebrate that past as well as look forward to the future in one of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s finest theatres. This production forms just part of the exciting programme of celebration events planned throughout the year and I urge the public to get along and join in the birthday events. This will definitely be one to tell the family all about in years to come.” Artistic Director Phil Williams said “As the Director of Flights of Fancy I have brought together a fantastic creative team and a multi generational cast to celebrate the centenary of the Park and Dare Theatre and the community it serves. It is not often you get the chance to create a new work with a cast with age ranging from 11-95. Animating this iconic building has been at the forefront of this creation.” Flights of Fancy is a co production between, RCT Theatres, National Dance Company Wales and Welsh National Opera with the participation of the talented people of all ages from the area from Artis Community, Treorchy Comprehensive School, Take pART; RCT Music Service and costume design students from Coleg Morgannwg. Flights of Fancy has been created with the funding support of Arts Council of Wales.
