Diary of A Madman
Living Pictures will be bringing their one man dark comedy, Diary of A Madman to Aberystwyth Arts Centre on Wednesday 5 June, 2013, as part of their Wales Tour.

Considered by many to be Gogol’s best work, Diary of a Madman, is set in 1830s St Petersberg, among the petty bourgeoise of Tsarist Russia.

The one man show is based on the character of Poprishchin (performed by Robert Bowman) who is a 40 year old low ranking civil servant driven insane by government bureacracy and hierarchy.

Gogol’s dark comedy focuses on how one man’s reality spirals deeper into a surreal fantasy world – dogs talk, they write love letters, his bosses are mad and hell bent on destroying him. But a final, thrilling discovery suddenly makes sense of the chaos...

Wales based actor Robert Bowman, (Royal National Theatre and Sherman Cymru) will captivate audiences with his arresting portrayal of one of Gogol’s most entertaining characters.

Director Sinéad Rushe (Olivier Award nominee) said:

“Diary of a Madman is a timeless story that explores the human condition when it comes face to face with it’s own mortality. Although set in 1830s Russia, the theme of insanity and politics still lives on today, which so many audiences will find fascinating.”

Diary of a Madman was first performed at Chapter in 2011 following its short 3 week run as a development piece which was funded by the Arts Council for Wales. Chief Executive for the Arts Council for Wales, Nick Capaldi picked it as one of the higlights of last year, who said:

“Robert Bowman’s extrodinary portrayal of the emponymous narrtator of Gogol’s Diary of a Madman at Chapter Arts Cebtre in Cardiff stood out. Here was acting of raw power and intensity and will long in my memory.”

Robert Bowman’s performamnce has captivated audiences furing its 80 minute performances as they see the civil servent gradually slip deeper and deeper into his mad pschosis world.

Diary of a Madman will be at Aberystwyth Arts Centre on Wednesday 5 June. Tickets are £8 (£7). For tickets and further information, please contact the ticket office on 01970 62 32 32 or go online www.aber.ac.uk/artscentre.
