Welsh Theatre company to perform a one man 60 minute knock out boxing play in a real South Wales gym
23-27 July (Guest Night 24 July)

Welsh Theatre Company, Broken Souls is producing James Gaddas’s knock out 60 minute boxing play in a real South Wales Boxing gym.

Shadow Boxing will be a site specific one man show which will be performed at the Phoenix Boxing Gym in Llanrumney, in Cardiff from 23-27 July, 8pm.

Over the 60 minute play, actor Alex Harries (Emmerdale, Pobol Y Cwm) will be pushed to the limit as he prepares his body and mind for the fight of his life in this one man show, that is about endurance in a world of tough men.

Written by Emmerdale actor James Gaddas, Shadow Boxing is the story about Flynn who is desperate to the be the best at boxing but living in the shadow of his Father's failure.

After walking out on his Father’s humiliating defeat in the ring, Flynn vows to train, to fight and to be better than his father ever could be. To be the best Flynn has to accept and overcome his past, his prejudice, but most of all come to terms with his true identity.

Performed in a real boxing ring and surrounded by boxing equipment and punch bags actor Alex will be performing as someone training to be the best at their game. It’s going to be a tough 60 minute workout mentally and physically for the actor. Alex, who was an amateur boxer previously, has had to get back in the ring and train vigorously since February in preparation for the performance with guidance from two professional amateur boxing trainers, Thear Al-Shayei and Gareth Seward.

Alex said, “Its been years since I’ve had to train like this but we’ve had great support from the trainers from the Phoenix Boxing Gym and my old coach, Gareth. Its an amazing community facility and shows how important this venue is for the community. Its going to be tough, I’m not 16 anymore but so far the gym have been great in supporting what the company are trying to do in producing this show.”

Shadow Boxing will be performed at the Phoenix Amateur Boxing Gym which is located on a housing estate in the east side of Cardiff called Llanrumney. The Llanrumney community transformed the former Scout Hut into a working boxing gym for young people only a few years ago and they are also fundraising for their next stage of developing the gym by building an extension.

The director of Shadow Boxing, James Ashton was keen to bring this play to Wales after seeing this performed in Edinburgh a few years ago. James said:

“I first saw Shadow Boxing in at the Edinburgh Fringe a few years ago and thought that this was an amazing powerful piece of theatre that has got to be seen again and I had the great idea of performing in a real working gym. Wales has such a strong heritage of producing boxers and the sport is still so prevalent in Wales that I felt it was right that we produce this.”

To enhance the site specific experience the only way to get to the gym will be via the Shadow Boxing Bus that will collect audiences from Chapter Arts Centre at 7.30pm and will take them to the gym in Llanrumney, with a return trip back to Chapter by 9.30pm.
