Arad Goch is very pleased to announce that Lea Helygain Adams, a 22 year old print maker and painter has been chosen to be our third Resident Artist at Canolfan Arad Goch, Aberystwyth.“As a Company, Arad Goch is very passionate about providing resources and opportunities for other Welsh artists – particularly young artists. We already have two resident artists, Simon Lovatt and Siriol Joyner and they are an important part of the development of Canolfan Arad Goch. I am really pleased that Lea is our latest resident artist – her work is contemporary, exciting and Welsh. I’m looking forward to developing projects with Lea and to see her own work developing over the next year” Jeremy Turner. Raised in a creative and Christian family, Lea was interested in art from a very young age. As well as being a ‘hobby’, art provided Lea with a form of therapy when she experienced a period of depression, and Christianity provided her with a new and enriched perspective. “I loved books when I was a child, but not reading them just looking at the illustrations! I spent hours copying them and it transported me to another world, , I‘m keen to return to that place through my work in the near future”. Lea’s work always starts with an illustration before experimenting and building the finished piece. Her passion lies with mixing techniques to create a new and fresh, look and texture. Her favourite techniques include collagraphy, print and 3D. “Picasso is my favourite artist, his work remains ‘new’! He wasn’t afraid of experimenting and ‘painting like a child’; I try to remind myself of this all the time. If I get bored with one style I change it as I don’t want other people to get bored of my work!” Originally from Penrhyndeudraeth and currently living in Penrhyncoch, Lea continues to think of herself as a ‘gog’, but she admits that Aberystwyth itself has provided her with the opportunity to develop her career as an artist. “I owe so much to my art teacher at Penweddig, Mr Glyn Thomas. He made me realise that I wanted to be a professional artist and as a result I have been selling my work and taking on commissions”. In 2012 Lea graduated from Aberystwyth University where she studied Fine Art. “The course was extremely helpful and I learnt several traditional techniques that have developed my work, in particular screen printing and collagraphy”. There is no doubt that Lea has worked hard over the past twelve months and has managed to make a name for herself in the Art scene in Wales and beyond. She has exhibited her work at MOMA Cymru, IMAGINE in Cardiff, the Quinta Christian Forum in the Midlands, and in New World Alive in Prestatyn where she worked as a Resident Artists. She also held an Exhibition at the recent Urdd Eisteddfod in Pembrokeshire where she was awarded with the Arts Scholarship Prize for the most promising artwork by an individual aged 16 – 25. Thinking ahead about her twelve month post at Canolfan Arad Goch, Lea is very keen to work with writers, dancers, musicians and more and there’s no doubt that Canolfan Arad Goch is the perfect location to develop such partnerships. “It’s a fantastic space to work; it houses an amazing glass window which has already inspired a new collection of work. I have already been discussing projects with Cwmni Theatr Arad Goch and will be providing my first workshop for young people at Ysgol Penweddig next week. It’s all very exciting!” As well as developing work here in Aberystwyth Lea will be travelling to France during the next month to take part in the ‘Double Vision’ conference, looking at the work of Christian artists in Europe. She will also visit Slovenia where she will be using her work to inspire an open discussion about Christianity. If you live in Aberystwyth or are visiting the town over the summer, pop in to Canolfan Arad Goch to see an exhibition of her work and to meet Lea herself. http://www.leaadams.moonfruit.com / http://laa9.wordpress.com/ |
