Leading children’s theatre company present ‘summer blockbuster’ of a theatre show |
This summer, Cardiff-based children’s theatre company Theatr Iolo follow up their 25th birthday year with Here Be Monsters, a new and thrilling family theatre production. Here Be Monsters is a magical tale of fantasy, quest and adventure for ages 8 plus (and their brave grown ups!) that will commence a three week tour of Wales in July. The show will visit Chapter Arts Centre in Cardiff 6-10 August. Something strange is happening in the town, right at the start of the Summer holidays. Dogs bark at things that aren’t there. The air smells sour and damp. And there is a sound of distant thunder, though the skies are bright and clear. Can you see what is hidden right in front of you? Ed and Elfi are a new brother and sister. Neither of them likes the new arrangement. But when the town is in danger, both must put aside their quarrels to protect it, and discover what being in a family is all about. Here Be Monsters is written by Mark Williams, who adapted the stage productions of Horrible Histories: The Frightful First World War and Horrible Science and whose debut novel Sleepless Knights is being published later this year. Mark comments: “I love stories that use fantasy to transform the everyday world, from writers like Philip Pullman, JK Rowling and Susan Cooper, to the enduring enchantment of Doctor Who. I wanted to write a play that combined a scary, exciting and fun adventure with humour and heart - characters who go on a personal journey that's just as much of a challenge as their magical quest. And I also wanted to tell a big story in a small town setting - to explore what new forms mythical monsters might take, should they turn up on our doorstep.” The production will be directed by Kevin Lewis, Artistic Director of Theatr Iolo. Theatr Iolo are a company with an international reputation and have been leading the way in theatre for children and young people in Wales and beyond. The company was recently awarded Winner of Best Play for Children and Young People by the Theatre Critics of Wales Awards 2013 for Grimm Tales and Kevin was one of three nominees in the Arts and Culture category in the Inspire Wales Awards 2013. Kevin comments: “We’re delighted to be producing Here Be Monsters – it’s a big, big show for us, a real ‘summer blockbuster’ as we’re calling it. Mark’s script is just fantastic – engaging, funny and just the right amount of scary. While the script itself is quite filmic with lots of different locations, characters and of course, the monsters, my challenge as Director will be to translate all of that into a theatrical production. We want our young and not so young audiences to have an experience that asks them to use their imaginations and that really shows off what live theatre can do that other mediums can’t. We’ll also be running workshops with schools before the summer holidays to really build up the experience and to take the imagination and theatricality out into the real world.” Here Be Monsters is on at Chapter in Cardiff 6-10 August at 2pm (with additional 7pm performances 8-9 August). Tickets are from £8 and are available from Chapter’s Box Office on 029 2030 4400 or online at www.chapter.org For more information on the production visit www.findthemonsters.com |
