Working in partnership to create a sustainable structure

Working in partnership to create a sustainable structure Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru have revealed plans for the Caffi Theatrau (Theatres’ Café) in the National Eisteddfod, Denbighshire and District, 2-10 August.

For the first time, Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru will be working in partnership with Cardiff Theatrical Services and Welsh National Opera to create an interesting and sustainable space for the Caffi Theatrau. The designer of the cafe is Sarah McCall from Capel Dewi, Carmarthenshire and a graduate from the Arts and Design College in Cardiff Metropolitan University.

“I’m passionate for using materials that we can use again, and that’s exactly what I’ve done in the Caffi Theatrau this year. The idea is based on a pop-up stand which can be taken apart and built again in a different location, again and again,” said Sarah.

“The aim of the design is to tie together the work of the ten companies that are taking part to see what they all have in common. What I realised as I researched into their work was that they all have something in common, which is the ethos of inspiring and representing the people of Wales in every part of the country. Some of the companies tour their productions and some are more site specific, so I wanted to make sure that the work of each company was represented as it should be. I decided to use neutral building materials and the main colour of the structure is grey which represents Welsh slates. The tubes which are the foundation of the structure represents the idea of growth of the performers and the theatre itself in Wales – today and for the future.”

The stand will be home to Welsh theatre companies during the week; Arad Goch, Theatr Bara Caws, Cwmni’r Fran Wen, Sherman Cymru, Canolfan Mileniwm Cymru, Galeri, Noson Allan and Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru. It’ll be a great chance to share ideas, to hear about the latest work by various companies, and of course, to chat over a cup of tea!

There will be events held in the cafe throughout theweek, which will vary between workshops for children, workshops for learners, scripting workshops and various talks.

A full programme of events on the maes throughout the week can be found on the Eisteddfod website:
