NATIONAL THEATRE WALES TO HOST MONTH-LONG RESIDENCY IN TREORCHY |
National Theatre Wales is preparing for the fourth and final residency in its third season - a month-long residency at the Park & Dare Theatre in Treorchy, throughout October 2013. The Park & Dare Theatre is a former miners’ institute in Rhondda Cynon Taff. Its construction in 1913 was funded by the mine workers of the local Park and Dare Collieries (the two were merged in 1955). Despite the closure of both mines in 1966, the theatre remains the cultural hub of the area. The residency will be led by a world premiere – a new, autobiographical play by Dylan Thomas Prize-winning author and Rhondda-born Rachel Trezise, Tonypandemonium (see separate press release). The residency’s events will include: Dirty, Gifted and Welsh - a two-day festival of new writing hosted by NTW and Wales's most exciting fringe theatre company, Dirty Protest; staging of a new version of Brecht’s Mother Courage, written by Ed Thomas; collaboration with local artists from all disciplines; up-and-coming, mid-career and beyond, through the company’s WalesLab initiative; a special event to celebrate the centenary of poet Gwyn Thomas’ birth, hosted by National Theatre Wales and Literature Wales; a National Theatre Wales Assembly (a free performance and debate event); gigs and events featuring up-and-coming local bands. National Theatre Wales’ artistic director John McGrath said: "The writing talent emerging from Wales at the moment is extraordinary, and we hope this, our fourth and final residency this year, will showcase the very best of what Treorchy and the whole of the Rhondda valley has to offer. I'm particularly excited about Ed Thomas' return to the stage, and the chance to celebrate the great Gwyn Thomas, who has been such an inspiration to National Theatre Wales already, and that the residency is centred around our premiere of Dylan Thomas Prize-winning writer Rachel Trezise's first stage play." National Theatre Wales’ Treorchy Residency Schedule Sat 19th & Sun 20th October, 10am-6pm National Theatre Wales & Dirty Protest DIRTY, GIFTED & WELSH A two-day celebration of Wales’ flourishing new theatre writing scene. New writing company Dirty Protest will collaborate with National Theatre Wales to produce a packed two-day programme of readings, pop-up plays, debates and dramatic clashes, with music and visuals thrown in! Tickets: £4 for the weekend, £2.50 per day (FREE if you also buy a ticket for Tonypandemonium) Thurs 24th October, 7pm Literature Wales in association with National Theatre Wales & RCT Theatres GWYN THOMAS: A CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION With Professor Dai Smith, Leighton Andrews AM, Rachel Trezise & Carolyn Hitt A celebration of the life of the acclaimed Rhondda playwright, novelist and television reviewer presented by Literature Wales. This is the centenary of Gwyn Thomas’ birth and his writings about a people and a place are as vibrant, witty and engaging as when they were first published. There will be clips of Gwyn Thomas in action along with insights into the man provided by this distinguished panel. Suitable for over 16s Tickets: £5 Friday 25th October, 7pm National Theatre Wales in association with RCT Theatres MOTHER COURAGE ON TRIAL The first glimpse of an exciting new National Theatre Wales production. One of Wales' greatest playwrights, Ed Thomas, returns to the stage after many years, with a new version of Brecht's most famous play, Mother Courage: the story of a woman trying to survive, and make a bit of profit, in the battlefields of Europe. Re-set in the world of the South Wales Valleys this new translation will be directed by National Theatre Wales Artistic Director John E McGrath. Mother Courage on Trial will involve readings from the new translation combined with a 'trial' of the main character - was she right to do what she did? Tickets: FREE Saturday 26th October, 7pm TREORCHY ASSEMBLY Assembly is a performance/debate event that responds to a local issue in a creative setting, leaving space for the audience to discuss and react. During the month of October we will be asking the people of Treorchy what their Assembly should be about, and which local creative people (actors, singers, poets, etc) should be involved.
