THEATR BARA CAWS PERFORM CYFAILL / TE YN Y GRUG AT ABERYSTWYTH ARTS CENTRE

THEATR BARA CAWS PERFORM CYFAILL / TE YN Y GRUG AT ABERYSTWYTH ARTS CENTRE
At the National Eisteddfod this year, in Denbigh, Theatr Bara Caws performed two new plays, ‘Cyfaill’ (Friend) by Francesca Rhydderch, and an adaptation of ‘Te yn y Grug’ (Tea in the Heather) by Manon Wyn Williams. The production can be seen at Aberystwyth Arts Centre on Monday 30 September at 7.30pm.

‘Cyfaill’ explores one of the most turbulent periods in the life of the author Kate Roberts. According to Francesca Rhydderch, Kate Roberts said that her own life read like a novel. She suffered a great deal as a young woman, following the death of her brother in the First World War, and then again the death of her husband, Morris, in l946. She continues, “By writing a play focusing on Kate’s grief following the loss of Morris Williams, my aim was to show her ability to create artistic works based on her own life’s experiences. In the hands of Betsan Llwyd, Artistic Director of Theatr Bara Caws, and the four experienced actors, the journey is both turbulent and elevating”.

The young dramatist from Angelesey, Manon Wyn Williams, is very pleased to have had the opportunity of adapting ‘Te yn y Grug’ for the stage. She is fully aware of the responsibilty of adapting such a well-known and well-loved text, and has placed great importance on staying as true to the original as possible. Manon adds, “This volume of Kate Roberts’s work is very dear to the hearts of the nation, and has played an important part in our psyche as children”.

“As the Eisteddfod was held in Denbigh this year, and as we performed in Theatr Twm o’r Nant, Kate Roberts’s life and work was an obvious choice for us,” said Betsan Llwyd. “And though she experienced some of her darkest hours in Denbigh, her time there also sparked her most creative period. It has been an interesting and a challenging journey working on a fictional play based in fact, alongside an adaption of one of the author’s most popular books.”

The cast of ‘Cyfaill’ and ‘Te yn y Grug’ are - Carys Gwilym, Morfudd Hughes, Fflur Medi Owen, Rhodri Sion, Manon Wilkinson
Director – Betsan Llwyd
