Drawing on their Welsh roots BK & DAD explore the beauty, bleakness and dereliction of a PAST.'Hiraeth - longing, yearning, nostalgia, for the Wales of the past' Positioning themselves inside any space in a building their mini installation of projectors and amps unleash a storm of riffs, thundering beats and visuals. With an instrumental thickness that is only comparable to metal, when you listen to BK & DAD, prepare to feel SURROUNDED. But it’s not all intensity and brutality like with Lightning Bolt or Hella (although there are definitely moments of it!) The over-riding themes of place, belonging & origin have driven their experiments in sound with residencies at Borth (West Wales), barns in Suffolk and Bakehouse studios in Norfolk. These Arts Council commisioned explorations have seen BK & Dad turn derelict churches (Norwich & Norfolk Festival) and tight corners at the end of stairs into slate grey wind bitten towers and dusks of spilled blood. Nearer to their roots Aberystwyth Arts Centre have also provided an installation space to realise these manifestations. Their latest release MUNDY starts in its ugliest state – with feedback and a riff that’s a little bit doomy, think Electric Wizard but brighter. And then it just gets even brighter, wiser, and more and more exploratory. I imagine this is what I would feel like if I were a scientist. Of course the sounds are glorious; there's fuzz and sludge and dunks and snappy snare hits. But this is an experience. So that you would retrieve these songs through buying a t-shirt makes total sense – even in the most literal sense – BK & DAD are tangible. They have had the pleasure of being played on Tom Robinsons Introducing and Stuart Macconies Freakzone on 6 Music with Xfm 's John Kennedy inviting them to play at the Xposure Alldayer 2013. 3rd OCT – The Studio, Aberystwyth Arts Centre – ABERYSTWYTH BK & DAD : http://balaclavanoise.co.uk/ https://www.facebook.com/bkanddad https://twitter.com/bkanddad |
