Tinderbox lights the way

A THEATRE company has received Lottery funding to stage a production of The Tinderbox at some of Wales's mid-scale venues.

Gwent Theatre is working in partnership with the Borough Theatre, Abergavenny, the Beaufort Theatre, Ebbw Vale and Theatr Brycheiniog, Brecon, on the special project.

It has also received support from Creu Cymru, the touring agency for Wales.

For many years mid-scale theatres have been finding it difficult to present drama for young people and family audiences which is created in Wales, as the production of such work is restricted to a handful of predominantly English-based companies.

The Tinderbox, which will tour theatres throughout Wales this autumn, has received an Arts For All Lottery grant from the Arts Council of Wales.

Written by Charles Way and inspired by the story by Hans Christian Andersen, it tells the strange and haunting tale of a young soldier who has nothing in the world but his good looks.

After a dramatic encounter with a witch and some dogs, he becomes wealthy beyond his wildest dreams.

But will his wealth help him secure the happiness and love he has desired for so long?

The Tinderbox is a humorous and moving journey from ignorance to enlightenment and is aimed at audiences aged six and over.

Other plays by Charles Way include A Spell of Cold Weather, The Flood and Red Shoes.
