Austrian dance / urban crew to entertain families at Sherman Theatre as part of October’s UK Family Arts Festival |
As part of the first UK Family Arts Festival, Dance Touring Partnership will be bringing the critically acclaimed Austrian dance theatre/urban crew Nobulus and their show Out Of the Shadow to Sherman Theatre on 22 & 23 October.Created and led by Alexander Wengler Out of the Shadow is a full length evolutionary fable, told on a grand scale by a 10-strong crew. Using an extraordinary mix of breakdance, popping and locking, contemporary dance, acrobatics and ballet Out of the Shadow tells a cautionary tale - from the creation of the Universe and evolution of man through to an imaginary apocalyptic future. Nobulus is an Austrian dance theatre company/urban styles crew, based in Salzburg, specialising in the creation of narrative based physical theatre. Speaking recently about the challenge of creating narrative work Wengler said: “Actually, I think Walt Disney was the ultimate storyteller. His animations tell of life, death, grief and joy. They appeal to all generations and depending on your age or experience, the things you understand in the films will differ. Some movies today are too dark; there is no hope or joy presented in the world they create, which is unrealistic - in real life there is always a balance of positive and negative, happiness and sadness. Disney understood that and it is something that I wanted to capture in Out of the Shadow.” Using only their bodies, the (eight male, two female) crew generate otherworldly scenes by morphing into structures, creatures and even machines. Underscored by an epic soundtrack inspired by hip-hop, classical and contemporary sources, the performers transform from flickering cosmic matter to a climatic, apocalyptic battle of human tanks and guns. Initially created by Wengler as a seven-minute showcase for the 2006 international hip-hop event Battle of the Year in Germany, Out of the Shadow grew into a 20 minute work for Breakin’ Convention 2007 at Sadler’s Wells - and proved to be such a hit that the following year an extended 50-minute version headlined Breakin’ Convention 2008. In recent times he has realised his original artistic vision of developing Out of the Shadow into a 90 minute full length version, premiering in the UK as part of this national tour. Also local dancers might get the opportunity to perform on stage with Nobulus if they enter the Dance Your City2 competition. Dance Touring Partnership who are bringing Nobulus to Wales is challenging solo dancers and dance groups to create a one minute dance video in front of an iconic landmark in Cardiff or around South Wales, film it, upload it to the Dance Your City Facebook page and compete for the chance to perform at the climax of the Out of the Shadow UK tour which takes place at the Nottingham Playhouse. The successful crew will perform their winning entry as a curtain raiser to awesome urban dance theatre show Out of the Shadow by Austrian dance theatre sensation Nobulus on Monday 18 November The first stage of the Dance Your City2 competition is a public online vote via Facebook to select the top five entries; these dancers will then perform in the live final in Nottingham on 17 November in front of a public audience and a panel of street dance experts, including Kenrick from professional hip-hop dance group Boy Blue Entertainment, and Rebekah Roberts, Artistic Director of the winning crew from last year’s competition.
