STEPTOE AND SON

STEPTOE AND SON Two episodes from the classic BBC TV Series performed live on stage!

The Bird: Harold meets a girl and against his better judgement agrees to invite her home for supper. She arrives an hour late, and goaded by his father he refuses to let her in. He is angry and upset and goes to bed. Left alone in the front room, the old man reveals the truth.......

Men of Letters: Opening with the very famous, and hilarious, 'Scrabble' scene, the rag and bone men are visited by the vicar who asks Harold and Albert to contribute articles to the church magazine. This they do, with Harold penning an historical view of Rag and Boning in the area, and Albert contributing the crossword resulting in the police seizing all the copies under the 'Obscene Publications' Act.

Bold Production return in collaboration with Aberystwyth Arts Centre to present these two classic BBC episodes of ‘Steptoe and Son’. Over the past ten years, Bold Productions have staged a series of contemporary classics from such writers as Harold Pinter, John Osborne, Samuel Beckett and Alan Bennett. This production may appear to represent a departure from the style of our previous work – but far from it. The underlying recurrent themes of our earlier productions are just as evident here.

‘Everyone remembers the bickering and arguing between father and son – and it stems from loneliness. These two men would be nothing without each other – and their constant arguments are born out of their necessity for each other. This is particularly highlighted in ‘The Bird’ – the first ever episode of the series – in which Albert ambushes Harold’s attempts to obtain a lady companion – a companion whom Albert sees would usurp his place in Harold’s life.

In ‘Men of Letters’ – we see Harold given what he sees to be an opportunity to escape the drudgery of his life – but the old man could never allow this – and so again, interferes to ensure Harold’s failure. Whilst these pieces are undoubtedly hilarious – the comedy is dark – and is born out of selfishness, loneliness, the desire to escape and improve one’s position on the social ladder and primarily – those moments of love and hatred between a father and son.'
