The New Theatre welcomes three British greats in three new shows

The New Theatre has today announced three shows coming to Cardiff in 2014, starring British greats Marti Pellow (Wet Wet Wet), Robert Powell (Holby City) and Jack Shepherd (Wycliffe). The shows they will be appearing in are Evita (17 - 22 February 2014), Black Coffee (4 – 8 March 2014) and Classic Ghosts (25 – 29 March 2014).

Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s extraordinary musical Evita, starring Marti Pellow as Che returns to the New Theatre from Monday 17 – Saturday 22 February 2014.

Telling the story of Eva Peron, wife of former Argentine dictator Juan Peron, Evita follows Eva’s journey from humble beginnings through to extraordinary wealth, power and iconic status which ultimately lead her to be heralded as the ‘spiritual leader of the nation’ by the Argentine people.
Evita boasts one of the most recognisable scores in musical theatre history including Don’t Cry For Me Argentina, On This Night of a Thousand Stars, You Must Love Me, and Another Suitcase in Another Hall.

Marti Pellow is best known as the lead singer of pop group Wet Wet Wet, but has in more recent years forged a career in musical theatre, appearing in Jekyll & Hyde, Blood Brothers, Chicago and Witches of Eastwick.

From Tuesday 4 – Saturday 8 March 2014, Black Coffee introduces Robert Powell as everyone’s favourite detective Hercule Poirot, in the first ever play written by Agatha Christie.

A quintessential English country estate is thrown into chaos following the murder of eccentric inventor Sir Claud Amory, and the theft of his new earth shattering formula. Arriving at the estate just moments too late, one man immediately senses a potent brew of despair, treachery, and deception amid the estate's occupants. That man is Hercule Poirot. In the first play ever written by Agatha Christie we follow super sleuth Poirot as he strives to uncover the truth and solve a mystery.

As well as a distinguished career in theatre, Robert Powell famously played the role of Jesus Christ in Jesus of Nazareth and the lead role of Richard Hannay in The Thirty-Nine Steps. Fans of Holby City will recognize him for the role of Mark Williams which he played for six years.

Classic Ghosts, a brand new double presentation of spine-tingling stories visits Cardiff from Tuesday 25 – Saturday 29 March 2014. Jack Shepherd (Wycliffe) stars in both, The Signalman by Charles Dickens & Oh, Whistle, and I’ll Come to You, My Lad by M. R. James.

The Signalman by Charles Dickens is exquisitely unnerving tale of a tormented signalman who is haunted by visions of impending disaster on his isolated stretch of line. Can a well meaning traveller, who chances upon the lonely signal box while out walking, calm the man’s fears before he spirals into self destruction?

Oh, Whistle, and I’ll Come to You, My Lad by M. R. James is the story of Professor Parkins, a Cambridge academic on an out of season holiday at a bleak English east coast hotel in 1907. At an old graveyard near a deserted beach he finds an old bone whistle. On cleaning it, he discovers the inscription: Quis est iste qui venit (“Who is this who is coming?”). Blowing the whistle he awakens a disturbing supernatural force. A terrifying ordeal follows and though his scepticism tries to dismiss his unearthly encounters, his eyes and ears cannot.

Jack Shepherd is an actor, playwright and theatre director, he is perhaps best known for his television roles and most notable his acclaimed role as the Detective Superintendent in the crime drama Wycliffe.
