Joey, the iconic equine star of the National Theatre’s production of War Horse makes his debut in Wales

Joey the life-size horse puppet, from the National Theatre’s internationally acclaimed production War Horse, made his first appearance in Wales ahead of the Welsh premiere of the production in June and July next year.

Marking the launch of War Horse in Wales, Joey the horse puppet posed and performed for the cameras in and around Wales Millennium Centre this Tuesday (15 Oct), amazing specially invited guests with his life-like presence. Puppetry director Jimmy Grimes, accompanied by puppeteers David Emmings (Joey Head), Stuart Angell (Joey Heart) and Michael Brett (Joey Hind), spoke about the ground-breaking puppetry work - provided by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company - which brings the breathing and galloping horses to life on stage. Tim van Eyken, (Song Man), was also at the event to perform songs from the production and speak to the attendees

Adapted from Michael Morpurgo’s bestselling novel, War Horse is the powerful story of a young boy called Albert and his beloved horse, Joey, who has been requisitioned to fight for the British in World War I. Caught in enemy crossfire, Joey ends up serving on both sides during the war before landing in No Man’s Land, while Albert, not old enough to enlist, embarks on a treacherous mission to find his horse and bring him home. War Horse is a remarkable tale of courage, loyalty and friendship.

Cardiff born Rebecca Killick who plays the role of Baby Joey and Annie Gilbert in the production was raised in Llanishen and trained in the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama before gaining her role in War Horse.

Based on a novel by Michael Morpurgo, War Horse is adapted by Nick Stafford and presented in association with Handspring Puppet Company. Directed by Marianne Elliott and Tom Morris, it is designed by Rae Smith, lighting is by Paule Constable and movement and horse choreography by Toby Sedgwick. The puppetry directors are Basil Jones and Adrian Kohler, with video design by 59 Productions Ltd, song-making by John Tams, music by Adrian Sutton and sound by Christopher Shutt. Alex Sims directs the tour with Katie Henry as associate director.

Since its premiere at the National Theatre in 2007, War Horse has been seen by over 4 million people worldwide.
