Propeller presents 'Pocket Merchant'at Aberystwyth Arts Centre At Aberystwyth Arts Centre Friday 25 October, 7.30pm

The Merchant of Venice is an uncompromising tale of greed and revenge. When Bassanio falls in love with the wealthy Portia, he becomes imprisoned in a bargain with a ruthless moneylender. A pound of flesh is sought and time is fast running out to untangle the trap of his own making.

This pocket-sized version of the critically acclaimed 2009 production brings one of Shakespeare’s darkest comedies to life in the way only Propeller can.

Under the direction of Edward Hall, Propeller is an all-male company that brings Shakespeare’s texts to life with their trademark clear, humorous and enlightening style.

After an enthralling hour, audiences are invited into the performance space with the actors to express their response to the show in the freest way possible.

Pocket Merchant provides an inspiring introduction not only to Shakespeare, but also to the highest quality theatre available.

Propeller is an all-male company which seeks to find a more engaging way of expressing Shakespeare and to completely explore the relationship between text and performance. Mixing a rigorous approach to the text with a modern physical aesthetic, they have been influenced by mask work, animation, classic and modern film and music from all ages. Propeller looks for different ways to inform the physical life of the production with the poetry of the text, and give as much control as possible to the actor in the telling of the story.
Propeller has toured internationally to Australia, China, Spain, Mexico, The Philippines, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Cyprus, Ireland, New Zealand, Tokyo, Gdansk, Germany, Italy, Malta, Hong Kong and the U.S.A.

‘If there are better productions of these plays this year, or even in the next few years, I will be astonished. Edward Hall's superb, all-male company Propeller proves again the value of a true ensemble and a director who treats Shakespeare's plays as if they'd just been written.’
