Joanna Young’s engaging double bill is being performed as part of the Discover Dance Festival at The Riverfront Theatre. As part of the upcoming Discover Dance Festival at The Riverfront in Newport, Joanna Young will be presenting an evening of the absorbing and intricately crafted dance she is gaining increasing renown for. The performance will feature the highly praised solo, Army of Me, and the Welsh premiere of The House Opposite. Alongside these will be an intriguing installation giving a behind the scenes look into how the pieces were made. Joanna, who is back in Wales having completed advanced training in London, created the two pieces over the past year. Joanna said “It has been a valuable opportunity to make these two pieces as part of my MA in choreography at London Contemporary Dance School. During this time I’ve really been able to focus on my creative process and how I approach new work. I’m really looking forward to showing the pieces as part of the Discover Dance Festival and engaging with audiences back in Wales.” Army of Me is a solo that explores both real and imagined memories and premonitions. The performer uses the stage as a way of mapping her choices and pathways, which is echoed by the original sound score by Filipe Sousa. Army of Me was inspired by the work of visual artists Brychan Tudor and a series of paintings by Amy Cutler. The House Opposite delves into images from the work of Leonora Carrington. It is a playful and elegant trio in which the three female performers explore their surroundings and relationship. The piece hints at rituals, games and domestic routine; yet is open to individual interpretation. The Discover Dance Festival takes place at The Riverfront from 11 to 16 October, 2013. Army of Me and The House Opposite will be performed on Tuesday 12 November 2013 at 7.30pm. The performance will be followed by a post show discussion with Joanna Young and the dancers. Tickets cost £6, £4 with reductions. Tickets can be booked on 01633 656757, online at www.newport.gov.uk or by calling into the Box Office. |
